Highly anticipated tubular versions of the 404 Firestrikes released, and the clinchers receive an update too.

SRAM subsidiary brand Zipp has produced what it claims to be its most technically advanced tubular wheel ever, the 404 Firestrike Tubular. Zipp has also updated its very popular 404 Firestrike Carbon Clincher.

Famous for its ‘Speed Weaponry’ currently used by the likes of Team Wiggins and AG2R La-Mondiale the new 404s maintain the much loved and versatile 58mm rim depth and toroidal rim shape. There is currently limited availability, with just 404 wheelsets being manufactured in both the clincher and tubular versions.

The wheels have several new features over the previous 404s, including newly designed titanium skewers, to provide more leverage, new CeramicSpeed bearings that provide lower rolling resistance and new valve extenders from Silca, which claim to eliminate valve rattle against the rim (something that plagues many deep section wheels, often requiring tape or another hack to be applied).

Other technologies in the wheels include: Showstopper™ brake track technology, which applies a molded in brake track pattern and introduces a Silicon Carbide (SiC) surface in an effort to improve wet weather braking. Showstopper technology delivers greater stopping power in wet conditions than any carbon wheel ever produced, offering braking on par with aluminum braking surfaces.

In addition, the Zipp 88/188v10 subset is claimed to add torsional stiffness through the use of a 2-cross lacing pattern utilizing Sapim CX-Ray spokes and precision-set bearing pre-load. Zipp claims that this means no bearing pre-load adjustment is ever required.
