Does anyone have a view on how a 45 minute spinning class compares to a 30 mile 18-20mph ride on moderately flat roads. I am limited for time and doing 2-3 classes a week. Lost weight! Joe

Never been to spinning class but they look torture and I am sure they work but getting out for 30 miles is the best way to go, even on fairly flat roads you have wind and slight gradients to vary the work load plus you will work your core better on the bike. I would suggest do both, road miles as often as you can, spin class when dark, cold and wet...oh that's year round this year. 30 miles at 20 mph is really good going, so I would say that has to be much harder than 45 minutes spin, cooler on you as well, indoor stuff cooks me!

I did a few spinning classes a couple of years ago, when I was monster fit. The final one - 90 minutes - nearly killed me. Heart rate got over 200, and the sweat was flowing in a steady stream - not drips - off my chin for the final third. It was hell. Suffice to say there are only a couple of hills I've suffered that hard on, and certainly not for that length of time. For endurance it's brilliant, but it bears no resemblance to the real thing and it's essentially a kind of cycle masturbation, and not just cos spinning classes are often full of w**kers. The main thing is that if you're doing a 30 mile circuit at 20mph, you don't usually have some lycra-clad Nazi screaming 'Good Job!', 'Go for it!' and 'Make this count!' at you to a soundtrack of dreadful hardcoreacideurotrance anthems. Anyhoo, great for general fitness and weight loss; rubbish for bike handling, self motivation and your basic quality of life.

90 minutes ? christus! I'm dead after 40 Spinning is great for weight loss and keeping your cardio vascular fitness up when you can't go out for a hack regularly .ie too wet/dark /late etc
Spinning or programmed cycling (Technogym) gives you more disciple in terms of intensity of effort as its easy to freewheel out on the bike. Try freewheeling on a spinning bike

Only do it in the winter, and remember to take a towel and bucket with you to catch the sweat. It's nothing like actually riding outside but it is more entertaining that sitting on rollers.
K
P.S. Don't take a heart monitor with you, it scares you sh__less when you see your heartrate going over 200.....

I love my rollers.
Got an old tv in the garage with a dvd player.
Add my old track bike and I can do that constant heart rate thing that I can't do at home because of the hills.
And it reminds me how to pedal.

Get a turbo or rollers, do it at home and save yourself the risk of catching a cold at the gym, a breeding ground for bugs if I ever saw one, and as tvrbird has already pointed out, gyms are full of w*nk*rs anyway!

TVR you have such a lovely way with words
Have you ever thought of writing poetry:
'There once was a TVRbird Who was great with the written word Sharp, pithy and witty Never one to take pity And her posts were seldom absurd'

Have you heard of rcruise63? His emoticon use was heavy Mostly 'laughers' and 'glasses' On sad ones he passes But uses the 'blusher' freely

I would reply in limerick or verse but then you would think me perverse
Better stop this before it gets out of hand A poetry duel can get bland
But an idea pops into my head Why not a limerick post instead
We could grab everybody's attention Like tvr's legendary outdoor sex confession
On second thoughts better not Or under Winegoblins collar will get hot
And it obviously won't amuse bfergie or BOSH Who will both think its a load of old tosh
And anyway next week back to school When I won't have the time to act the fool

By your flagrant disregard for the iambic pentameter I take it you're not an English teacher then? The relaxed approach to scansion, elision of your dactyls into your spondees, abrupt verse divisions and yet curiously weak caesurae, and free use of catalectic lines suggests something more in the practical arts...woodwork, mayhap? Interesting afflatus though.
