Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen has signed a new, three-year contract with Team Sky, taking him up to the end of the 2014 season with the British-based WorldTour outfit.

Boasson Hagen joined Sky at the start of the 2010 season, and had arguably his best year yet as a professional in 2011, winning two stages of the Tour de France in July.

However, with the addition of sprinter Mark Cavendish on Sky’s roster for 2012 and with Bradley Wiggins once again aiming for overall Tour glory, there is some doubt as to whether Boasson Hagen will ride the Tour in 2012. Instead, the solid all-rounder looks set to target one-day races and shorter stage races.

“The Classics are going to be my main focus for the next few seasons,” the 24-year-old said. “I would love to win a race like Milan-San Remo or Paris-Roubaix and I’ll be working hard to try and achieve those goals.

“There will be plenty of other opportunities to show what I can do in the next three years though and when I’m not going for wins myself I will be helping my team-mates out as much as I can.”

Sky team principal David Brailsford added: “Edvald is widely recognised as one of the most exciting talents in the pro peloton and we are delighted that he has chosen to stay with Team Sky for another three seasons.

“No-one quite knows yet where his true limits lie and we will continue to work tirelessly to support him to fulfil his potential.”
