A selection of the best cycling sportives and events that take place in the next two months

There are hundreds of cycling events throughout 2017 in virtually every corner of Britain, as the popularity of cycling shows no sign of diminishing.

To help you pick out some of the best events to ride, we present a selection of sportives and other rides over the coming weeks.


Good Friday April 14

The Compact 50

A relatively short, yet testing sportive that takes in some of the Surrey Hills’ most well-known climbs, including Shere Road, Barhatch Lane, Holmbury St Mary, Coldharbour and Ranmore. Those taking part get a pasta meal, feed station, electronic timing and mechanical support during the event.

Easter Monday April 17

Cotswold Spring Classic

55km, 100km and 160km routes

Event is run in conjunction with charity partner Against Breast Cancer, and takes in some of the beautiful scenery and villages of the stunning Cotswolds.

Saturday April 22

Rutland CiCLE Tour

Enjoy the surroundings of Rutland Water with this springtime sportive that makes an excursion into Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Does not include any off-road sections, so is suitable for all bikes and riders.

Brewin Dolphin Ridgeway Rouleur Sportive

This centrally-located sportive takes in some of the best lanes and countryside that Oxfordshire has to offer, including the Chiltern Hills and crossing the River Thames. Start and finish venue is the Kassam Stadium, home of Oxford United FC, with its wealth of facilities.

Cycling Weekly Dartmoor Demon

Dartmoor offers tough terrain for cyclists, with its relentless undulating roads set against a unique backdrop of heathland and the National Park’s iconic tors. Every cyclist should experience Dartmoor riding at least once – and many come back year after year.

Sunday April 30

Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride

Fox Valley, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
45, 75 and 100km routes

Ride on many of the same roads as the pro riders in the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire on the race’s final stage, and cross the same finish line. The long, 100-kilometre route is a testing one, including 1947 metres of climbing.

Cycling Weekly The Arrow

This relatively flat sportive in Lincolnshire means that you can really take it at your own pace. Quiet country lanes meandering through sleepy villages is what The Arrow is all about, with the countryside – and perhaps your legs – waking up as the spring gets into full swing.

South Western Road Club’s annual spring sportive hits its 19th edition in 2017, with a tried-and-tested route through Surrey and Sussex, including the North Downs. Target times are set for each route based on age/gender, giving riders something to aim for as they enjoy the scenery.

The organiser of BikeOxford promises a ‘day of cycling to remember’. Starting and finishing in the surroundings of the Oxford University Rugby Club, the four route distances take you north of the city, with the two longer options touching on the picturesque Cotswolds.

Dulux Trade London Revolution

This two-day sportive takes riders on a complete 185-mile loop around London, going south around the North Downs and then up north to the Chilterns and Epping Forest with an over-night stop in Windsor Racecourse. A variety of packages are available, offering riders the chance to tackle both days, or either day, with or without overnight camping.

Le Classique

Fancy something a bit different? Perhaps cycling in France? It couldn’t be easier with this event, where you met near the Dover ferry port and are then transported over to Calais via Ferry for a ride around the countryside of northern France. The terrain is relatively flat, leaving you to enjoy the view.

Cycling Weekly Surrey Hills Cyclone

The Surrey Hills Cyclone dips into neighbouring Kent and Sussex as it tackles some of the best cycling lanes south of London. There are just enough testing hills to make the routes a challenge and provide some great views.
