Fabio Felline (Trek Factory Racing) took a surprise sprint victory on stage two of the Tour of the Basque Country on Tuesday, outsprinting stage one winner Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) on the finish into Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Felline, who has never taken a WorldTour victory until now, launched his sprint early on the run-in, and while Matthews was abley led out by his teammate Daryl Impey, the Australian was unable to react in time to catch the Italian before the line.

The likes of Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Soudal) and world champion Michal Kwiatkowski (Etixx – Quick-Step) once again contested the final sprint on another day scattered with third and fourth category climbs, with duo finishing in third and fourth respectively.

GC contenders, including Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and Tejay van Garderen (BMC) all finished with the same time, as did Britain’s Simon Yates (Orica-GreenEdge).

Team Sky’s Ben Swift went missing in action again when the race came down to the sprint, on a stage which looked to suit his characteristics before the day began.

Amets Txurruka (Caja Rural), Sebastian Reichenbach (IAM Cycling) and Louis Vervaeke (Lotto-Soudal) were the brave trio to attempt a breakaway on the stage, and held the peloton off until around 15km remaining, when they were caught on the final climb before the finish.

Wednesday’s will see the riders take on the race’s queen stage, with eight categorised climbs on the 170.7km course likely to draw the GC contenders in to the action.
