Former Tour de France leader and Ardennes Classics specialist Kim Kirchen (Katusha) collapsed at his team hotel after stage seven of the Tour de Suisse with suspected heart problems and has been taken to hospital in Zurich.
The 31-year-old from Luxembourg remained in hospital overnight and is now a series of tests to try and identify the problem.
“He’s had similar problems before, during the spring,” Katusha team manager Serge Parsani told Cycling Weekly at the start of stage eight. The problems are believed to have affected Kirchen’s sight as well as his heart, shortly before Fleche Wallone, a race he won in 2008.
“We’re now waiting to see what results the tests could have.”
