Paul Martens tweets a photo of the plastercast on his wrist after breaking his scaphoid at Liege-Bastogne-Liege

It was an up and down Liege-Bastogne-Liege for LottoNL-Jumbo rider Paul Martens in more ways than one.

The 31-year-old finished the 253km Classic in 96th place and with a fractured wrist, but the German bagged himself a few Strava KOMs to soften the blow.

Martens rolled over the finish line in Liege nearly 17 minutes behind winner Alejandro Valverde, but claimed 14 KOMs along the way, despite crashing near the Côte de la Redoute climb.

The rider tweeted a picture of his arm in a cast after the race, promising to return after a few weeks out.

Fellow LottoNL-Jumbo rider, and Strava favourite, Laurens Ten Dam picked up five KOMs of his own along the route on his way to 62nd place, with the Dutchman crossing the line on his own some six-and-a-half minutes down on the winner.

Valverde claimed his third Liege title, adding to the Flèche Wallonne title he won on Wednesday.
