With cyclocross season in full swing, there are more and more videos turning up on line of guys falling off their bikes in the mud. And even the pros are not immune.
It’s that season again when getting muddy is all part of the fun. And one contestant in the Irish Fixx cyclocross in Dublin didn’t bother to wait until the mud came to him – he went to it.
Whether he went better for not having to worry about getting muddy later in the race we don’t know, as we couldn’t see his race number.

But it’s reassuring to know that even the top pros get it wrong sometimes, as this video of Belgian cross superstar Sven Nys in action at the Jaarmarktcross Niel on 11 November shows.
Nys, on the yellow bike, came off on an off-camber descent and ended up tangled up with another competitor.
Having extricated himself from the mud, he then ran into a barrier at the top of a slope later in the race – there’s a clip of it later in the video.
Despite this he ended up coming third in the race, so there’s hope for us all yet. His verdict on his performance: “I’ll never win a race riding like this”.
Nys has won just about every race in cyclocross multiple times over the last fifteen years, but has announced his retirement at the end of the current season.
With the infamous Koksijde cyclocross race coming up this weekend expect more spills, although since it’s raced on sand dunes it’s not likely to be as muddy as other races.
