The Tom Simpson memorial in Harworth was destroyed last night (Friday November 10) when it was hit by a car. Police in North Nottinghamshire were called to a road traffic accident in the early hours of this morning after the driver of a Ford Mondeo lost control of his car.
The man ploughed into the stone memorial on Scrooby road and went straight through the metal fence behind. He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
The memorial, that was paid for by money raised by local riders, had been in situ since 1997 and will now be re-located. For a full story see next week’s Cycling Weekly
