Stage one will take the riders away from Sacramento from Davis to Santa Rosa, the hometown of double-winner, Levi Leipheimer.

The stage is punctuated with three climbs dotted along the route, although the fast flat sections in between should mean that the bunch stays together until the finish.

After descending from Calistoga Road, the riders will complete several circuits in downtown Santa Rosa, where the crowds have been often been the largest on the whole race.

Before the men arrive, there will be a women?s criterium in Santa Rosa to get the crowds excited, with $15,000 of prize money on offer.
