Trek-Segafredo rider Kiel Reijnen has been taken to hospital after crashing and landing in a ditch at the Dwars door Vlaanderen

Midway through the Belgian cobblestone race, the American was seen riding off the road and in a grass verge, before he went over his bike and landed in a ditch.

There was no other rider near to him and no explanation as to why he was alone on the grass, but the 30-year-old required medical support and was taken to hospital.

Trek-Segafredo were concerned at the incident, tweeting that they "hope this is not as bad as it looks."

Thankfully, though, Reijnen didn't suffer any serious injuries.

It is Reijnen's first Flanders classic of the season and his eleventh race day, having already raced Dubai Tour, Abu Dhabi Tour, Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo.

Reignen's racing his second season at WorldTour level, having joined from UnitedHealthcare in 2016, where he raced for three seasons and took stage wins in the Tour of Utah, USA Pro Challenge won consecutive editions of the The Philadelphia Cycling Classic in 2013 and 2014.
