Sir Chris Hoy career profile

Sir Chris Hoy is an ambassador not only for British cycling, but for British sport. As a teenager Hoy rode mountain bikes, time trials, road and track. Since turning senior, Hoy has decided to focus his efforts on the track where he has been prolific, winning many titles. Hoy was awarded Scottish Sports Personality of the Year in 2003 and received an MBE for services to cycling in 2005.

Hoy's breakthrough year came in 2004, with his first Olympic gold medal in the 1km time trial ('kilo') event. However, soon after the UCI announced that the 'kilo' (Hoy's speciality) would be scrapped from the Olympics to make way for BMX. Not to be disheartened, he made a rapid transformation into a keirin and sprint specialist, soon winning world and commonwealth titles in both disciplines.

Hoy's apotheosis came in 2008, taking two world titles at the World track championships in Manchester before taking an historic trio of gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, cementing his reputation not only as one of Britain's finest ever track cyclists, but also the fastest track sprinter and kierin rider in the world.

Since Beijing, Hoy made several public appearances (including at the London Freewheel event) and is a champion for public health through cycling. In November and December of 2008, Hoy was lauded with the Sports Journalists' Association's Sportsman of the Year award and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in recognition of his incredible achievements in Beijing.

To crown what was a remarkable season for Hoy, he was then knighted in the 2009 New Year Honours List, a rare accomplishment for a still-active sportsman.

In his last Olympic Games in London 2012, Chris Hoy crowned a remarkable career by winning gold in the team sprint and keirin events to become Britain's most successful Olympic athlete in history with six gold medals.

Hoy confirmed his retirement from competition at a press conference in April 2013.
