Evans tops latest UCI World Tour ranking

Cadel Evans on podium, Tour de France 2011, stage 20

Tour de France winner Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) has unseated Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) at the top of the Union Cycliste Internationale's latest World Tour ranking, published on Monday afternoon.

Evans sits a sizeable 103 points ahead of second-placed rider Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank) in the ranking based on points accrued in World Tour-ranked races throughout the season. Former ranking leader Gilbert slips to third.

Frank and Andy Schleck's (Leopard-Trek) double podium appearance at the Tour de France has elevated them to seventh and eighth respectively.

Tour de France King of the Mountains Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel) is another high mover, jumping up to fifth from 13th.

Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad) moves up from 64th to 19th after his five stage wins at the Tour. Britain's highest-placed rider remains Bradley Wiggins (Sky), who won the Criterium du Dauphine in June. He slips from 12th to 16th.

Leopard-Trek move to top of the ranking-by-team with Evans' BMC team up to second.

Top nation remains unchanged from before the Tour de France, with Spain sitting in pole position ahead of Italy. Britain remains ranked in ninth place.

The UCI's Worldtour Ranking is compiled using a points system, with points awarded for one-day race, tour stage and stage race overall finishing positions for events in the UCI's World Tour.

The amount of points awarded depends on the ranking of the event. For example, winning the Tour de France overall gives a rider twice as many points as winning the Eneco Tour overall.

The next counting event in the UCI World Tour will be the 2011 Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian in Spain on July 30.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
