Dan Martin wins Volta a Catalunya

Dan Martin wins overall, Volta a Catalunya 2013, stage seven

Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp) won the 2013 Volta a Catalunya on Sunday, successfully defending his overall lead in the race from last-minute attacks by rivals Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida).

Martin finished the race 17 seconds ahead of Rodriguez overall, with Scaponi moving up into third at 34 seconds. Bradley Wiggins (Sky) showed that his form is building ahead of his assault on the Giro d'Italia in May with fifth place at 54 seconds.

Thomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil-DCM) won the final stage from a four-man escape group that also contained Scarponi. Sky's David Lopez was second, with Robert Kiserlovski (RadioShack-Leopard) in third.

Former Associate Editor

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
