Snazzy new lace-up kicks light up in the dark under streetlights and headlights

We’ve long been fans of the Giro Empire shoes, finding them to be light, comfy, and very stiff (as you’d expect from the £249.99 price-tag for the SLX model). Now Giro has taken its lace ups down a very different design path with this reflective version.

>>> Cycling shoes: a buyer’s guide

These shoes maintain all of the main features of the existing Empires. The laces are obviously still there, which Giro say offer a better, more precise fit than normal ratchet or dial adjustment systems. These are combined with the Evofiber microfibre upper which is breathable and helps to improve comfort.

The Easton EC90 carbon sole has been revamped for 2016, and as long as it’s as stiff and light as the previous version, we’re not complaining. The shoes are also come with Giro’s Supernatural Footbed kit, which claim to offer excellent arch support whatever the shape of your foot.

But onto the reflectiveness. These shoes really do light up impressively well when under streetlights after dark (check out the video above to see them in action). Giro is marketing the shoes on the basis of safety, but we’re pretty sure people will be buying them because they really are very cool.

As these shoes have only just been launched, there’s no word yet on UK pricing. However the standard version of the Giro Empires costs £229.99, so we’d expect these reflective numbers to be the same, or perhaps a little more.

    I was thinking these would be good in the winter but then I realised you’ll probably be wearing overshoes over them anyway, so pointless?
