The Pinarello ethos is not to change designs for the sake of change. Valverde and the rest of the Caisse d’Epargne squad rolled out of London for the Tour de France in July on a completely new Pinarello Prince that has taken three years to produce.

The frame is multi-monocoque construction in 50HM1K carbon, which is a high-modulus carbon-fibre with a strength rating of 50 tons/cm2. This is the stiffest of five grades of carbon used in Pinarello frame manufacture and further stiffness is provided by the 1K finish, the tightest weave and most expensive to produce. The frame, according to an effusive Fausto Pinarello, is the firm?s greatest achievement to date.

Wavy OndaFPX seatstays, mimicking the unique Pinarello Onda fork, should soak up vibration to prevent the stiff material from making the ride feel too harsh. A reinforced head tube, an oversized 1¼ lower bearing in the headset, a substantially oversized bottom bracket and the asymmetrical chainstays are all there to minimise flex.

The geometry moves away from the more common compact approach, all sizes above 50cm having a horizontal tube. Selle Italia has provided the personal touch on Valverde?s bike with his own SLR saddle.
