Giro d’Italia 2013: Stage 10
When: Tuesday, May 14
To: Altopiano del Montasio
Category: High mountains
Enzo Cainero, the founder of Monte Zoncolan and Crostis, brings us Altopiano del Montasio. For the first time in Giro history, the 10.4km Friulano climb makes an appearance.
The climb rises above Sella Nevea, which sits at 1,143m, and continues until 1,502m. In total, after turning west in Chiusaforte, the riders face 21.4km of climbing. After Sella Nevea, it gets serious: the road kicks up to 20 per cent for 1.5km and eases back off for the final 2.5km to the chalets.
Serra San Bruno will feel like an aperitivo in comparison. This is the Giro’s first true summit finish of 2013.
We should see results similar to last year’s first mountain stage (to Cervinia), where many of the GC contenders dropped out and only a few title-fighters came to the fore. And like Cervinia, this stage features one climb beforehand, the Passo Cason di Lanza.
Sella Nevea was the front line in World War One, and the Italian Alpini troops were charged with controlling it. In so doing, they needed hearty food. They were in luck because milk from the cows is used to produce Montasio cheese. Eat it straight as frico or in polenta.
