Where are we?
Today’s riders head further north up the Mediterranean coast, before arriving in the historic port city of Genoa for the finish. At this point in last year’s Giro, the peloton was competing around a circuit in Belfast; Genoa could hardly be more Italian, with its narrow cobbled alleyways and Romanesque churches.

What’s on the route?
Not a lot — but for one climb the stage is entirely flat. That sole obstacle should at least give TV commentators something to talk about, and kicks off perhaps the least prestigious of all Grand Tour battles — that for the first wearer of the mountains jersey, contested by long-suffering opportunists with little hope of retaining the jersey come the serious mountains.

The real action gets going once the peloton reaches the 6.8km circuit in Genoa, which is tackled twice and culminates in a flat finishing straight tailor-made for bunch sprinters.

The first sprint stage of a Grand Tour is always a hectic affair, as hopeful sprinters and nervous GC riders compete to stay at the front of an oversized peloton not yet whittled down by abandonments. At this year’s Giro, this will likely be even more the case, as there are several days until the next chance for a bunch finish.
