A look back at some of the history of the Vuelta a España

The third and final Grand Tour of the year is underway and has already been quite lively thanks to a controversial opening stage and the expulsion of one of the favourites on the second stage.

The Vuelta a España began back in 1935 and as of 2015 will have been raced 70 times: it is from this 80 years that this week’s cycling quiz takes its questions.

Often, and perhaps unfairly, seen as the poorer cousin of the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, the Vuelta has seen a stellar line-up for the last few editions thanks to team orders and riders’ misfortunes earlier in the season.

This was the case last year when Chris Froome and Alberto Contador went head to head after both crashing out of the Tour; and this year’s race boasts some big names as an unusual number of the Tour’s top ten are attempting to double-up.

Looking at jersey colours, stage winners, winner nationalities and many other facets of the Spanish race, these 14 questions are intended to test and boost your knowledge with just over two weeks of this year’s edition to go.
