Pro bike: Tony Martin's Canyon Speedmax (video)

We take a closer look at Tony Martin's Canyon Speedmax, the four time world time trial champion's time trial bike

Here we have time trial world champion Tony Martin's Canyon Speedmax, the German racer's weapon for races against the clock in 2017.

Martin is a renowned time trial rider, having held the World Championship title four times, though was unable to take a victory on his new Katusha team Speedmax in 2017.

Four times a winner in the Worlds TT

It's a mean looking bike, worthy of such a prestigious rider. The frame is all black except for the world champion stripes that run the length of the bike, and his rear wheel.

Martin is clearly incredibly tech-minded when it comes to the setup of his bike. Interestingly, he's running the same single-ring setup for his drive chain that we first spotted at the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Single 58t ring

Not only does this help keep the weight down, but it's actually far more aerodynamic, especially when the chainring is completely solid, as is the case here.

The frankly enormous 58t (yes really) chainring has long teeth to make sure he doesn't drop a chain, plus extra security is added by the chain catcher, too.

Certainly doesn't look comfortable

The 58t chainring also allows him to sit comfortable in the middle of the cassette without wasting any watts, as would be the case on a standard double setup.

He's using a SRAM Red eTap groupset and a Quarq power meter and has blip shifters fitted to his bar ends to help him change gear when he's in his aero position.

His Zipp wheels are shod with clincher tyres, rather than tubulars thanks to their improved rolling resistance, despite the slight weight penalty.

His front wheel is running a Continental Grand Prix TT in the more aero 23mm size, while his rear is a 25mm Continental Podium TT.

Finally, there's also grip tape stuck to his saddle to help keep him in position, although last time it did look rather uncomfortable.
