In this edition of Secrets of the Toolbox, One Pro Cycling’s head mechanic Keith Hicks reveals his favourite tool and the weirdest thing you’ll find in his toolbox.
One Pro Cycling was founded in early 2015 by former England cricketer Matt Prior, who has said the team’s goal is to ride on the UCI World Tour within five years, and the team recently signed Milan-San Remo winner Matt Goss.
Hicks’ favourite tool is the hanger alignment tool for checking the rear mech and he also mentions that bar taping is one of his favourite parts of the job.
Marcin Bialoblocki, who recently came ninth in the Individual Time Trial at the World Championships, will be pleased to know that he is the fussiest rider Hicks has to deal with, especially when it comes to the placement and number of bottle cages before races.
Mechanics working on bikes worth thousands of pounds would be expected to have relatively expensive and complicated tools to fix them – but that doesn’t mean there’s no place for sticky tape.
Hicks keeps several different types of sticky tape for keeping things stuck onto the bikes through all kinds of weather conditions.
Hicks also shares another trait with the majority of amateur cyclists and bike mechanics – he hates tidying up afterwards.
