Undoubtedly the hardest stage of the race, stage 16 would see the peloton of the 2017 Giro d'Italia take on a 222km break with three huge climbs, and the Cima Coppi awarded at the top of the highest point of the race atop the Passo dello Stelvio.

With Nairo Quintana (Movistar) starting the stage with a 2-41 deficit to the pink jersey of Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb), the parcours looked to present plenty of opportunities for the Colombian to attack and gain time.

There could also be opportunities for the break to succeed, especially if the GC contenders decided to mark each other and not worry about the stage win.

The Giro d’Italia will continue on Wednesday with a 219km stage from Tirano to Canazei (Val di Fassa) which should take in some spectacular Alpine scenery but generally sticks to flatter roads in the valleys.
