I never understood comments adults made like ‘act your age not your shoe size’. I always found such advice really irritating, probably because, in that specific example, I’ve always had big feet. However, I recently discovered an aspect of adulting that is actually quite good.

Wheeled carry-on luggage.

I’ve always felt there’s something more youthful about going through an airport with a backpack. A little like baggy pants for snowboarding, versus shiny black Italian salopettes – you can choose your travel and holiday attire carefully to suit the particular character you most want to channel.

When it comes to carry-on luggage, I’ve avoided the wheeled carry-on bag like the plague, convinced that it would add at least 20 years to my age and mark me out as a German management consultant, not a wannabe pro mountain biker. So I’ve persevered with a scruffy backpack, albeit the excellent and loyal Restrap Duffle I’ve had for about 13 years now.

That was until I met some guys from Thule this year at the Riva del Garda bike festival. They handed me a rather smart-looking Thule Chasm and asked me to review it.

Surrounded by very cool bikes and mountain gear at the time, all very much more of the mountain cosplay I prefer, I considered it odd but a relatively small win, so I gladly accepted and took the bag. It's on such a good deal today for Cyber Monday, I simply had to finally tell someone about it.

The surprise is just how much it’s changed my life since that moment. No one would argue with the practicality of a backpack, but a wheeled carry-on now absolutely wins it for me in middle age. And while trying to look younger is certainly a fool’s errand for me these days, I think it doesn’t do me any harm in the kudos stakes either. I wouldn’t say I get admiring looks, but it’s so much easier to grab a laptop, reach for my camera, and do all the things I need to while at an airport – and frankly, I am never going back.

The Thule Chasm is made of some extremely good materials too. The bag’s fabric is tough, looks brilliant and is virtually unmarked after at least eight return flights through European airports this year, along with countless weekends somewhere in the car. The wheels, clips, zips, and the all-important telescopic handle are all solid, dependable, and exactly as you’d hope they’d be.

There are also some game-changing compression sacks that squish everything down to save space, giving you more room than even my fairly cavernous duffle. It’s all neatly organised and almost like a little travel library compared to the chaos of duffle-life, with endless handy pouches and zipped sections. The compression bags also serve as dirty laundry bags, so you can just grab them when you get home and delay the real unpacking until after your dinner.

The main issue is the price. As a journalist, I probably couldn’t justify purchasing one of these if I had to buy it. It’s a big ticket premium item. But I was given this bag essentially for free. And while that doesn’t influence my impression of the product – just as with anything else lent to me for review without payment – if it’s rubbish, I’ll say so, regardless.

It does, however, highlight how expensive good luggage can be. I wouldn’t and couldn’t afford to buy this Thule Chasm at full price. However, if you can and you’re in the market for a really excellent, perhaps even outstanding, piece of wheeled carry-on, you won’t want to miss the current deal.

The item usually costs £369.95, for what must be Sweden’s finest carry-on export. But today, you can get one for just £275, bringing it into the range of some much poorer, way less cool and capable gear – making it a bit of an unbeatable Cyber Monday bargain.

I can’t say it’s the best case ever, as I have literally never tested another piece of carry-on, but I can say it’s really very well made and works brilliantly. If you’re going to upgrade your travel kit to something a little more refined, like I did through privilege, Thule has the kind of brand cachet that means you won’t look like a miserable old sod heading to a conference when you’re rolling through airport security with it.

And it does make things way easier than travelling with a backpack and I suspect it's going to last just as long if not way longer than my trusty duffle has.

The Dura-Ace pedal system from Shimano occupies an odd position in cycling, in that they’re hellishly expensive, but are also meaningfully better than the lower tier version.

The trouble is they are very expensive indeed at $330 / $235.

This deal shifts the dial in the DA system's favour so much, that no one could argue there's a better pedal system, anywhere, from any manufacturer than this one at this price.

First, let’s not mess around. Shimano’s SL road pedal system is brilliant. Unchanged since homus-erectus first emerged from the cave, the pedals benefit the rider by delivering one of the largest pedal areas on the market, spreading the weight of the rider, across the ball of the foot, resulting in less discomfort, and less hotspots. Bravo Shimano. They come with Shimano build quality too.

When it comes to the Dura-Ace label you should expect the best, and you’d expect the pedals to be carrying less timber than a lower tier version, and they are indeed 20g’s lighter, but there is some actual engineering in a Dura-Ace pedal that exists for something other than the pursuit of lightweight.

Incongruous though it may sound, given the lighter weight in the overall system, there is in fact an extra bearing. And this bearing creates not only a stiffer pedalling platform, but a more efficient one, with less resistance under load, and therefore less wear over the long term.

I struggle to think of anything else on a bike where the same can be said of ‘tiering up’ on the set up.

The kicker is as always, the price. Unless it’s Cyber Monday. In which case the usual rules definitely do not apply.

If you want to help yourself to a great pedalling system, that at this price becomes inarguably, inextricably, the very best pedalling system on the market, today is the day. Before the clock strikes twelve, and this glass cycling slipper turns back into an expensive pumpkin.

Gravel Burn is the toughest off-road stage race in the world, and you need a bike up for the challenge. I chose to use the Cannondale SuperX Lab71, and while I did long for some suspension and wider tyres as the race progressed, the platform got me through Gravel Burn with a top-45 overall finish and 5th in my category.

The SuperX is a racy gravel bike available in several builds. While I used the range-topping Lab71 version for Gravel Burn, any of the carbon models in the range would have done just as good a job, including the Carbon 3 model pictured, now on sale at Sigma Sports this Cyber Monday.

This deal won't last much longer, so make sure you take advantage of the 27% discount.

The geometry of the SuperX is not too far removed from its SuperSix brother. A slightly more relaxed 71-degree head angle, longer chainstays (422mm), and a longer wheelbase (1,020mm) have added more control and stability to the platform. While the Lab71 model utilises Cannondale's Halo Series 0 carbon layup, the Carbon 3 model uses a standard layup, which is a bit heavier but still balances stiffness with compliance.

Claimed weight without pedals and standard Vittoria Terreno T50 40mm tyres is pegged at just under 9kg, which is very respectable for a bike of this price, with this much versatility. What I like about the SuperX is its ability to work as both a gravel and road bike - just fit a set of road wheels and it's good to go.

Controversial opinion: cycling glasses are the coolest bit of kit you can own. Looking at the specs of the Forerunner 970, there is plenty to like about to like. To start with, it's going to be exceptionally accurate thanks to its advanced multiband SatIQ GPS and Elevate Gen 5 heart rate sensor. The Elevate Gen 5 is Garmin's optical heart rate sensor, which powers advanced health and fitness tracking, which they say is the offer in terms of wearable HR accuracy.

I tested the Ribble Ultra-Race this summer, back- to-back with a Colnago V5RS. I wanted to dislike the Colnago because it’s so otherworldly expensive, but I just couldn’t. It's relatively conservative road geometry compared to something more thrilling like a Specialised Tarmac made it steady in all situations and the comfort afforded from the frame gave a level of refinement you don’t expect in a road race bike, and I loved it.

At the same time, I was riding one of these, A Ribble Ultra-Race, and whilst I made some reasonable points about what I did and didn’t like about the bike in comparison to the V5RS, the comparison isn’t that fair. And the differences, tiny. When you consider the price point, even at full price. I noted at the time that the Ribble Ultra-Race offered more thrills, for a lot less cash, and that I thought it was a fantastic bike.

That’s why I’m absolutely sideswiped by this deal. They cannot be making any money at this price, on a bike that already offered exceptional performance and value.

The Colnago V5RS i tested – also tested by my colleague Rook – was kitted out with Enve wheels, and you could say that's not even a fair comparison, given Ribble's position in the market compared to Colnago at the premium end. That would be fair, and the Colnago is nearly 13k in that spec. 8.5k more than this Ribble.

But what of the equivalent spec? Ok, it's not directly the same spec, but it's close, built with Ultegra Di2. And well that's on sale too, it is Cyber Monday after all.

I've found a deal on Colnago V5RS in the same UAE team colours, which ordinarily retails at £8995, for just £6999. If you're in the market for a Colnago and have more money than sense today, that's also a killer offer.

But here, today, with my money, I'd be shooting for this Ribble, and take an accommodation upgrade, and maybe a spare bike (!) for my fancy trip to the Majorca 312, which I could easily pay to go on with the money I'd saved. You won't go any slower, anywhere, and the geo on the Ribble is undoubtedly more exciting in most situations, so I know what I'd be doing.

SRAM Force Axs is my favourite groupset just now, for it’s sheer brilliance in terms of braking performance, and the simplicity of the SRAM user experience when it comes to set-up, bleeding brakes, the app, indexing and what it’s like to live with is without equal when all things are considered alongside price.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I think it’s sheer stupidity to shell out for the Red groupset if you don’t have a sponsor to pay for your bikes, so the fact that this Ribble can be had today, for less than five grand, in this spec, is astonishing to me.

There is no faster way around your local crit' circuit for less money than this bike, today. If you can find something better, buy it. No one should care enough about the brand on the downtube to deny the value you’re getting here in comparison to almost any other road bike offer I’ve seen this year.

They won’t hang around, and I’m sure Ribble won’t hold this discount into this week, so act fast whilst there’s still plenty of sizes available.

If you would prefer to plump for the Colnago V5RS, I have found a really outstanding deal on that bike, and I absolutely love it – for all the irrational and rational reasons you'd hope – and for me it's a near perfect bike. If you've got the money, why not have the dream brand.

They only seem to have them left in size 51. Don't be alarmed if you're bang average sized like me, because 51 in Colnago land is equivalent to a medium-large, 56.

Don't ask me why the fit numbers make no sense – this whole article is about the numbers not making sense on the price tags this weekend, and I know people will still ignore my advice on this Ribble today anyway.

Do as you wish. Two cracking bikes, both on a very decent discount. None of it has to make sense of course.

Winter has firmly landed. Yesterday was absolutely Baltic, and today I've got over 40 miles per hour wind and torrential rain. Safe to say that we skipped the riding commute to school today.

I hear you. The best smart indoor trainers, especially those of the direct-drive variety, are costly propositions but are undeniably among the best cycling purchases you can make. As winter closes in and the colder temperatures and rain force us inside, embracing indoor cycling is the only way to come out the other end fitter and stronger, and ready to tackle summer.

I know I've been waxing lyrical about the Wahoo Kickr Core 2 with Zwift Cog and Click discount at Zwift, but this Saris H3 Plus smart trainer might be the deal of the Cyber Monday cycling deals weekend - now just £279.99. While not as popular as Wahoo and Elite, Saris is a prominent brand in the US with a range of products I've highly rated in the past. This includes the MP1 Nfinity Trainer Platform, which I wrote about in the five must-have gadgets for racing on Zwift.

Like many of the top, middle-range units in the segment, the Saris H3 Plus smart trainer benefits from a maximum power output of 2,000W, 20% gradient simulation, and a maximum accuracy deviation of +/-2 per cent, the former two of which are better than the new Wahoo Kickr Core 2. It also gains Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity.

While the Saris H3 Plus is not compatible with the Zwift Cog and Click (yet, that is), some users still prefer the physical presence of a cassette and the natural shifting it offers. As such, the Saris H3 Plus is compatible with all the best indoor training apps, including Zwift and MyWhoosh, and can now be used with a 12-speed cassette, too.

A complex set of factors has driven the rise of the TPU inner tube in 2025, but it remains a trend worth noting. It would be ignorant for us to think that this is all being driven by those just upgrading their old butyl tubes. The increase in the use of hookless rims by wheel manufacturers is making tyre choice and compatibility a real issue for riders. Some are just fed up with the mess of tubeless tyre setups, and many don't see the point when you still need to carry a tube for emergencies.

The thing I find most stressful about cycling isn’t the traffic (though that’s a close second), it isn’t having the right kit or the slickest bike set-up - it’s locking my bike up to grab a quick end-of-ride coffee, or to nip into a shop, and having it stolen.

I have a collection of locks: two d-locks, one combination lock that I keep wrapped around my handlebars for short absences only, and a small chain lock. But the most I’ve ever spent on one is £40 - I’m loath to spend money on bike locks, the sense of injustice at having to invest in kit to guard against another person’s decision to nick my lovely bike too strong. But I really should.

It also scored a five-star rating from our Cycling Weekly reviewers, who hailed it: “light, affordable and possibly the most secure lock on the market.” It’s its lightness that really appeals to me too. The uniform of many cyclists I see pedalling around London seems to be: a pair of wide trousers, a little beanie and a bike lock hanging off a belt-loop. How their trousers don’t get tugged down from the weight of their d-lock so effortlessly attached boggles my mind. This d-lock might just be my ticket to the cool-club - light enough to cart around without the need of a bag, but strong enough to guard against theft. Hallelujah.

Northern hemisphere winters can be rough. Not only do the colder temperatures force us indoors to train on Zwift and the best smart indoor trainers, but even if we wanted to ride outside, our winter cycling clothing often isn't up to the task. That's where the Assos Mille GT Ultraz Winter Jacket Evo comes in, rated as one of the best winter cycling jackets.

When I initially tested this jacket back in 2021, I had the same feelings as former Cycling Weekly tech writer Stefan Abram, who praised the Assos Mille GT Ultraz Winter Jacket Evo for its warmth, fit, and double sleeve design, citing its price as the only negative.

It's still not the cheapest jacket around, but Competitive Cyclist has slashed its price by a whopping 30%, from $369 to $258.30, making it more appealing than before, while Sigma Sports in the UK has the same Assos Mille GT Ultraz Winter Jacket at a 41% off discount.

While I understand this deal might still be out of budget for many readers, it should be looked at more as a long-term investment than an unnecessary splurge, as mine is still going strong four years down the line. The outer and inner layers of this jacket are distinct fabrics that have some degree of independent movement. This, along with the impressive stretchiness, is a major contributor to the excellent fit. In no place does it feel baggy or restrictively tight.

Perhaps the best consequence of the two-layer construction is that you are no longer faced with the age-old conundrum: Do the cuffs of your gloves go over your sleeves, or do your sleeves go over the cuffs of your gloves? With this jacket, you can put the cuffs over the inner fabric to prevent drafts from shooting up your arms, while the outer fabric goes over the top to keep rain from dripping down into your gloves.

The three rear pockets are generously sized, with flaps at the top that function as “lids” to keep your contents safe and secure. Regarding reflective detailing, two strips run the full height of the rear pockets.

Assos kit is renowned for lasting for years, so purchasing a solid winter item from the range is generally considered a good investment, even if the initial outlay is high.

The first time I ever cycled up a proper mountain, it was in the Fizik Vento Infinito Knit Carbon 2 road shoes. They're a great pair of performance cycling shoes, and now with huge discounts in both the US at Competitive Cyclist and in the UK at Sigma Sports, they're even closer to being within reach.

Sure, maybe you just want to dress up like me, but beyond that, they're an excellent pair of shoes, and a great option to get, one of the very many Cyber Monday cycling deals we have been rounding up.

I got these shoes in to test when I used to work for the now sadly long-gone Procycling magazine, and they were so comfy that I wondered if I could get away with wearing them around the house as slippers as opposed to taking them on my bike. Sure, they would be too slippy to work on carpet, and they're not particularly designed for warmth, but they are very comfy.

They're a bit old now, having been out for five years, but that doesn't stop them from being top shoes – the technology hasn't moved on that much. They have two BOA dials, and the strap that links to one of them pulls the arch tight. They are very much a pair of shoes designed for getting the power down.

I still own the Fiziks, although they are competing for my attention these days with a couple of garish yellow shoes – if I were in America, maybe I would consider the red version, to stand out. The knitted upper is designed for breathability and comfort; it works in all weathers, though it might be worth pairing it with an overshoe or toe cover at this time of year.

I rode up the Großglockner in Austria in them, one of my top cycling achievements. They've been through some serious testing over the years and have always come out on top. They're comfy, and a top performance model too.

The carbon R2 sole is the stiffest which Fizik offers, and I cannot stress how inflexible it is, making it perfect for riding on the road, powering up climbs or putting those watts in on the flat. It should also be said that they're really light too, weighing in at about 225g per shoe. They're an all-rounder and reasonably stylish too. The BOA dials allow the shoes to be tightened to perfection as well.

There is no excuse for not keeping your bike clean. Well, that's what I like to think – I usually employ every excuse under the sun when I've got back from a ride, even if it has been one of those dirty days out there on the road.

However, there is one excuse you can dispense with. British bike cleaning brand Muc-Off has 25% off everything site-wide for Cyber Monday, in the USA as well as the UK, so you can't claim it's not affordable. There are extra freebies to be had as well, with a free bottle of bike cleaner if you spend over £50/$50, and a bottle of concentrate when you spend over £100/$100. Simple!

I've been using Muc-Off's products for years now, and not just because they're from just down the road and where I grew up (me in Southampton, Muc-Off in Poole). Their cleaners are great, they really do what they are supposed to – get dirt off – and they have always seemed good value too. Well, now they're even better, thanks to that 25% off.

A bottle of their nano-tech bike cleaner genuinely lasts months because you don't need to be too liberal with it for it to work its magic, especially when you use the right brushes and sponges with it.

Think how virtuous you will feel when you go for your next ride, especially if it's with a group, and you have a clean bike – forget about it working better, being more efficient and making your parts last longer – you'll look better and smarter when it's spotless.

Muc-Off's drivetrain cleaner is excellent too, and really gets to work removing grease from the chain and cassette before you reapply whatever lube suits the current moment. Let's be honest, in December, that's likely to be wet lube or, at best, all-weather stuff. With a quarter off, it's not a deal to be looked at in the mouth.

I also use Muc-Off's chamois cream, which keeps another part of the bike-riding experience smooth and problem-free. It is really good stuff, and it really helps protect from any nasty issues in your saddle area.

The Cheapest carbon wheels on the planet right now just dipped under $270 with this Cyber Monday deal – but would you ride them?

Everyone loves a set of deep-section wheels. Even gravel bikes look better with a 50mm wheel in them. Brompton’s even. They also deliver a measurable benefit in terms of 'free' speed, such as their ability to improve the aerodynamic package in a road bike context.

But there's a problem, and that's price. Even the cheapest carbon wheels in our best wheels buying guides cost close to a grand, but what if you could buy a pair with similar specs for under $300?

Well thanks to Cyber Monday and the clever people at Superteam wheels, you can.

But wait, those wheels can’t be safe at that price can they?

Well, whilst I can’t attest to how safe they are, beyond some pretty impressive credentials shared on their website. And what looks like a lot more transparency than some brands in terms of the insights they seem to be sharing into their process and testing, there are also plenty of influencers and youtubers who have took the gamble and shelled out for a pair. With it seems, not too many problems.

I have actually ridden a pair of Superteam wheels, only around a car park, but I lived to tell the tale, and the friend who’d bought them (he paid considerably more for them) now swears by them and has experienced no problems that he’s been keen to share, or at least that I’m aware of.

All I can say about them from that brief encounter was that, both in terms of contemporary specs, aesthetics, and first impressions of the build quality, they did not look much different from the way you’d expect a quality set to look and feel.

They have 2:1 spokes so should be laced plenty stiff enough, come in 50mm depth, with a 21mm internal, and are hooked for improved tyre security and less worries about tyre pressure. The claimed weight is near as damn it 1500g for the set. So on paper, what's not to like, for 200 bags.

There's more than a stale whiff of a colonialist attitude in the way we discuss ‘Chinese’ engineering sometimes, and certainly cheap parts of Asian origin, which is largely misplaced in the modern context, and especially in the case of carbon wheel development.

Most innovations in carbon wheel technology in the last decade will have been Asian engineered, and a large proportion of the world’s highest-performance carbon wheels are made in and around where Superteam is located.

These are exceptionally cheap however, and with an item like this where safety is paramount, price has to be a serious consideration in this context. And please bear in mind we have not had a pair in hand, let alone tested them properly.

But, perhaps, if you want to give an outlier a roll, and get your hands on what must be the very cheapest set of 50mm deep carbon wheels on the planet right now, that's entirely up to you.

If you fancy them, you'd better pull the trigger quick before this pretty spectacular Cyber Monday deal goes away. It's not often you see a set of carbon wheels for the same price as a pair of premium tyres.

Recapping Sunday

Right, it's just coming up for 10 pm here in the UK, nearly time for me to call it a day. However, for our American counterparts, it's largely still afternoon or early evening. So, let's have a quick recap on what's happened today.

The Sunday of the Thanksgiving weekend is a bit of an odd one, as we wait to see which retailers shift to Cyber Monday cycling deals from Black Friday. For many, this is mostly a renaming job; however, we do regularly see some price changes as we head into Monday.

It's usually where retailers tend to remove offers that are now low on stock and go deeper on ones that haven't worked, or if we are lucky, introduce new ones.

Easily the biggest deal of the day again goes to Hannah and Garmin for this Epix Pro deal—an enormous saving of over $500. Hannah genuinely had to ask if Garmin knew about this.

I've just been gadding about at Tredz, which has site wide deals ranging from 35% off bikes, 43% off helmets and 46% off clothing. Definitely worth checking out.

If you're out for bargains this Cyber Monday, which let's face it we all are, one item you might not be looking at buying is Tadej Pogačar's Y1RS – currently on auction at Sothebys.

Bike security mightn't be exciting, but it's definitely a necessity, and with these you'll be outwitting the bike thieves, which has to be as rewarding as any deal.

So I delved a bit deeper into the accessories available at Tredz and found this 29% off deal on a Topeak Joe Blow III pump that really did blow me away. (No. Just no. - Ed)

I've had this pump in my garage for more years than I care to remember (the same one - I've never needed to replace it, or any parts). It still looks great and it still inflates tyres with gusto – including all my tubeless set-ups.

If you're considering a new floor pump, this is the one.

One of the great things about filming your riding, whether using a drone or an action cam, is that you get to relive it again and again. The fun never stops!

With that in mind, there are some great Amazon US deals on the GoPro Hero 13 and, especially, GoPro Hero 13 bundles, with a 30% off the GoPro HERO13 Black Extended Power Bundle.

If you're in the UK you're in luck too – the Hero 13 is 28% off, reduced from £399.99 to £287.07.

When we reviewed the camera in the summer we said it had "Brilliant video performance with boosted HDR and great additional lenses".

The price was pretty much the only criticism. Well, Cyber Monday to the rescue!

Back over at Saddleback, I came across these rather cool looking gravel shoes from Italian brand Sidi. I've been looking for some gravel-orientated shoes for a while, and with 40% off, I could definitely be tempted by these.

Might save them till the mud has gone though, looking at that colour.

If you're spending this Cyber Monday doing some winter dreaming of summer bikepacking adventures, I might have just the ticket for you. I've just spotted the venerable Kona Rove DL at Jenson USA with a full 50% off – reduced from $1,999 all the way down to $999.94.

That's a pretty impressive deal for a bike that has been earning its credentials for years now. It's a rugged, steel framed go-anywhere machine, and comes complete with SRAM Rival 11-speed drivetrain and three-pack bosses on the fork blades.

Every size from 48 to 54cm available – but you do have to like green.

I've just had word from colleagues that the deals on the Garmin 1040 GPS computer are dwindling, with UK retailers pushing the prices back up. There is one great deal still around though, and that's at Balfe's Bikes, which still has it priced at £339 – that's 23% off SRP.

If you've been sitting on the fence over this one, now's probably the time to stick it in your shopping cart and head to checkout.

While I was over at Balfe's Bikes, I spotted this SRAM PG-1130 11-speed cassette, which has 20% off, reduced from £96 to £77. It is, in fact, just what I need for my own bike, and I've never spotted it cheaper. Into the basket it went!

If you've not seen it already colleague Matt has just published an interesting look into the rise of TPU inner tube that – naturally, this being Cyber Monday – includes a few great deals both in the US and the UK. One of these even amounts to 49% off!

TPU tubes offer a significant performance gain over Butyl tubes, Matt points out, and can come very close to tubeless with the right set-up.

The only downside is cost – on days that aren't Cyber Monday, at least.

I reckon both these things could make some pretty basic - and boujee - stocking fillers? Or one for the Christmas list?

The DryGuy shoe drier! I enviously spotted a friend using one of these to dry his muddy, soaking wet shoes after a mountain bike ride this weekend. Unfortunately for me, his didn't come with the option of drying four shoes at once like this $93.99 one, currently on 16% off on Amazon.

It's so good, that our North American editor, Anne-Marije Rook, as treasured hers for 12 years: "I can't tell you how many I've bought over the years as housewarming gifts, wedding gifts and birthdays," she said.

There’s plenty to choose from but I’m going to draw your attention to the long sleeve merino jersey. I’m a big fan of merino wool and its application for cycling clothing and Andy Turner rated the jersey when he reviewed it earlier this year… and now there’s more than $100 off retail.

Dream bikes often remain just that thanks to their hefty price tags. But Cyber Monday does serve as perhaps the best opportunity to take the plunge. I recently helped edit Andy Carr’s review of the new Cervelo S5 aero road bike, and I know how much he enjoyed riding it, praising its handling and improved comfort compared to the previous model.

When it comes to essential cycling clothing to get through the coldest months a reliable jacket is a must. If you scour the Cyber Monday sales you’ll find one that suits your needs and your budget but I thought I could point you in the direction of a couple of noteworthy options that have been highlighted by two of my colleagues…

First up is the Assos Mille GT Ultraz Winter jacket, which is a favoutite of tech writer Aaron Borrill, and is currently offered in both the US and the UK with hefty discounts.

Thenh there’s the Castelli Alpha Doppio, which James Shrubsall has selected for recommendation. It’s a jacket that came out on top in our winter jacket buyers guide, and is again offered with a significant discount in both the US and the UK.

Competitive Cyclist have some impressive discounts on premium road helmets this Cyber Monday.

Helmets seem to have become really expensive as of late so these deals make some of the best lids we’ve reviewed, such as the Kask Protone Icon, and the Lazer Z1, far more affordable.

When it comes to cycling helmets, I’m a total creature of habit. Once I find a model I love, I’ll wear it until it’s dented or worn out, only to buy the exact same one again. When it comes to surviving winter on the bike, being appropriately kitted out for the job is your biggest defence against the cold.

Arguably, the most essential item in your armour will be a pair of the very best winter cycling gloves. But keeping hands warm and functioning while maintaining sufficient dexterity is a tricky balancing act.

Which is why we've been such long-term fans of the Gorewear Gore-Tex Infinium gloves, and why we were absolutely gutted when the brand announced its closing, and stopping production in March next year, which means the excellent gloves will be no more.

We've hand-picked our favourite Cyber Monday Cycling Deals, adding any significant savings on everything from bikes to tech and kit, but this one feels so bittersweet. It's a great deal, but it signals the beginning of the end for the brand.

These are the ideal winter gloves for anyone who finds the bulk of a more padded pair restrictive. There's no padding on the palms, which provides a great tactile feel and excellent grip.

Sizes are already becoming limited, and I'm finding that I have to hunt around, and pay a little more for some of the more popular sizes in plain black, but don't miss the chance of grabbing a pair in the hope your size/ colour choice might come down in price.

With production winding down, and the brand set to close this coming March, this really will be a case of when it's gone, it really is gone.

The POC Cytal is our number one choice when it comes to the best road bike helmets, and scored a flawless 5-star review from our expert tester, Andy Turner.

Whatever POC helmet catches your eye, I'd advise you to move quickly, as these Cyber Monday deals are likely to end soon. The Sigma Sports deal is already showing as a limited-time deal, and with 52% off, it's going to sell out.

As our best overall pick when it comes to a road bike helmet, the POC Cytal has some stiff competition and, until this Cyber Monday deal, a price to match.

The capitalist machine doesn’t stop just because it's the Sabbath, and Cyber Monday cycling deals are still live and moving fast. Hang on, does that mean this is the Black Sabbath, or Cyber Sunday? Who knows?

Whilst we hover in this moment of search-intent-shopping-uncertainty, what we do know is that we’re seeing more of the direct brands cutting prices as we move gently but decisively from Black Friday into the real-deal-bike-bonanza of Cyber Monday.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t bargains today; however, if you hunt them down, so this weekend we've done the hard work for you, and I'm pleased to say today could still be the best time to grab one.

Prices are holding, but they won't hang around for long. These are the best fast-moving gravel bike deals I’ve found this weekend.

Ribble CGR / Gravel Range (available in the UK)

Ribble and versatile bikes have been synonymous since time began. So they know a thing or two about designing bikes that do more than one thing, and the CGR is the best example of that.

Standing for ‘commute, gravel, road’ the CGR range is a do-it-all package that is pretty unbeatable in terms of value, and the variety of use cases this bike will deliver on.

We’re used to seeing hyper-segmentation in bike marketing: gravel-race, adventure-gravel, all-road, when really the CGR doesn’t just span those categories in a jack-of-all-trades master-of-none kind of way, it will in fact work just as a well as any of the specialist stuff, most of the time.

Why buy one?

Ribble have a direct consumer model that means they hit prices no one else can touch. They’ve also been at it a very long time, so they know which vendors to use to get the result they need in terms of how the bike works, and for the numbers on their spreadsheets. That’s the reality they work in and there’s few brands better at it. In recent years, a ton of new investment into the brand has seen them make huge strides in terms of the customer experience too, so you don’t have to feel like you’re compromising by going direct.

Canyon Grail and Grizl (UK and USA)

Canyon have a bit of stealth sale going on very decent discounts across both Grizl and Grail ranges. I’ve had a Grizl in for test all summer and I don’t want to give it back: it’s been my pub bike; I’ve used it to ride to my part time job; and I’ve even taken it to Kelling Heath and ragged it around the mountain bike trails up there. There’s some routes here along the coast and through pine trees, on sandy tracks and marshes and it’s eaten all of it, and has been a huge motivator for my riding this year. It’s got storage in the frame and chunky, purposeful design that puts me in the mind of a mountain bike and that’s no bad thing, because it’s capable enough on the road to be a pleasure to pedal in a road context, then it’s rowdy and happiest when you leave the tarmac – it’s brilliantly versatile.

Which one would I buy?

Grail is the racier of the two, and is the one to go for if you’re looking for more of an all-road solution, or if you’re looking for outright speed, on less technical trails. I’d take the chunkier, funkier, go anywhere Grizl for everything from Bikepacking with your mates to Unbound or Trakka.

Specialized - Diverge (UK and USA)

The Diverge is one the most comfortable, confidence inspiring carbon gravel bikes out there. Futureshock is a great piece of comfort tech giving you some bounce at the front, providing you look after it, and there’s a Diverge for every pocket almost, with alloy options which ride beautifully and don’t give much away to the carbon models.

Specialized’s Black Friday / Cyber Monday hub shows free shipping and some really good mark downs across the Diverge family, in loads of colours and mixed sizes. The price tracking pages are highlighting competitive pricing on the current Diverge Sport and Expert builds too.

Why buy now?

There’s just some very good deals on what is a pretty special bike. It’s arguably more conventional looking than the Canyon Alternatives, but Specialized really do know what they’re doing, and the Diverge is one of the best examples of them at their best. For the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend period, you don’t have to pay more for that experience.

Cannondale Topstone

I love a Cannondale. So often they’ve been marked down in reviews over the years because they’ve brought some whacky idea to market, and had to pay for it in downgrades on the groupset, or elsewhere on the spec sheet, and as a result they struggled to hit top marks against competitors which seem to offer more on the spec sheet.

That means a Cannondale in a sale can be your very best five-star buy everytime. They just struggle in grouptests when other brands take the easier route and seem to offer better value.

Want a Lefty suspension fork for no reason other than a Saab like commitment to do it right and differently, and Cannondale have got your back. The truth is though, the Topstone is long standing cracker, with excellent ride quality and a quirky spec that doesn’t make it stand out for being more expensive this weekend. Here in the Cyber Monday seasonal crush, it’s like everyone has it on sale.

The bike is perfect for endurance gravel riding and bike packing and today you can pick one up on a very decent markdown at REI, Dick’s Sports Goods and plenty of other specialist dealers.

Which one to buy?

Topstone 3 is showing the biggest markdowns, where you’re going to get most Topstone per dollar spent. Plenty are offering good prices, but I’ve seen several with free returns (so you can try the bike at home) and some good finance deals flashing up.

Don’t forget some retailers are also offering discount codes, and further offers subject to simple tasks like signing up for their news letter, so do take advantage and code stack your way to a cheaper Topstone where you can.

Salsa Warbird (USA, Frameset and builds)

How do you know a cyclist rides a Salsa? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.

I was stoked to find this bike on sale. It’s their race orientated carbon gravel bike: light, lively and very adaptable for rough races or fast bike packing.

We needed to look a bit harder to find the real deals on this one, but there’s some great offers on framesets, and if you’re prepared to do the shopping, you can compound your discounts on other items like wheels and groupsets, and bag yourself a very fancy build project for not a lot of money this weekend.

Why buy?

This one is really about a dream build winter project. Get a decent deal on this frameset now and do your own build, with a selection of other discounts compounding your benefit, and you’re going to be getting something really special to distract you from all this rubbish weather. The result will be far more individual, and it’s going to kill it when you get the bikes out again in the Spring.

Giant Revolt / Revolt Advanced

Revolt is a bit of an institution round these parts. I unboxed one last week and was struck but just how much you’re getting for the money with Giant, and the Revolt is the best example of that. It also has really pretty special paint for a bike at this price point, with the one I had in my hands coated in a deep metallic black with gold detailing. Many far more expensive bikes just aren’t finished nearly so well. That view runs pretty hard against the common perception of a Giant bike.

It’s refined, very well finished, it’s as good as an all-road option as it is as an out and out gravel bike. No nonsense, but definitely not just a sensible option in the case of the Revolt.

Why buy now?

Giant has a ton of dealers in the UK who are moving stock on ahead of the new season. There’s some killer bike deals, but this is the best I’ve found, and it won’t hang around long.

3T Racemax

I have a soft spot for the 3T Exploro Racemax. 3T was one of the first to develop an aero-styled racing gravel platform, and I was fortunate enough to ride one of the very first models at 3T near Milan.

One lunchtime, after a meeting with a lovely man called Reiner who was the boss at the time, I rolled out of their factory on a white Racemax – just like the one in this deal in terms of colour and specifications – and joined some 3T team members for a lunchtime ride along the river. The towpath was chalky and rutted, making it an ideal setting for a first taste of this kind of bike, and I was hooked on gravel bikes from that moment.

Several years on, and Exploro has continued to evolve.

I currently have the top-spec new version in for testing, and will report on it very soon, but I can say it has lost none of its charm. Its looks, with a boxy-aero aesthetic, are now much more common on other brands' bikes, yet they remain very ownable and undeniably Vroomen-White, in a good way.

That's why this killer deal on a 2023 model caught my eye – it’s got 40% off. Need I say more? The groupset has since been upgraded, but the old one was great and otherwise, it boasts a very stylish spec sheet on a bike that's now at a price point where literally none of your mates will have found or bought something quite so exotic for the same amount of cash.

Cyber Monday shopping tips for the best deals on gravel bikes

Check sizes first

No point falling in love with the crazy paint scheme that just came into your budget if it’s only available in a size XL. Check sizing, if they’ve got yours buy it, if they haven’t move on.

Look for code stacking opportunities:

Voucher codes and discounts for sign ups can add another 10 or 20% reduction to the advertised price, so check what's available when you're comparing headline discounts. We always try and mention them, and weed out the better deals, but it's always worth checking.

Framesets only

Groupsets, wheels, bars are all on sale this Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend, and whilst we’ve found you some of the best cycling deals and best deals on bikes we can, some parts will be on sale for cheaper than trade price, so you might find you can tier up on the groupset, or get those fancy wheels into a self-build project.

If you’re building with a local mechanic budget for at least $300 dollars labour. Your mechanic has gotta eat!

Just three short days ago, Adam, the Cycling Weekly News Editor, found what was a gem of a deal in the early Black Friday spoils.

With some retailers knocking up to a 23% off the RRP, it was hardly to be sniffed at; who wouldn't want £250/ $ off the price of the much coveted Garmin Edge 1040 GPS bike computer?

Anyway, while tracking all the Cyber Monday cycling deals across this cyber weekend, I suddenly saw that retailers in the UK appear to have started a price war.

While price matching is to be expected, undercutting isn't something we usually see.

Balfes currently undercuts the Decathlon deal by £10, and with free postage, I'm actually wondering if the two brands that have got this extra saving have realised that all the other retailers haven't quite discounted it this heavily.

These price drops, rather than matches, aren't something I've seen in the past half-decade while covering Black Friday and other sale periods, such as Amazon Prime Big Deals Day. So I really don't think it will hang around for long.

When we reviewed the Edge 1040, it was Garmin's flagship bike computer. One of the only bad things we had to say at the time was that it was wildly expensive.

The price has naturally been reduced due to a newer model, the Garmin Edge 1050 now taking top spot, but even at the time of the launch, we concluded that the Edge 1040 was probably still the better buy as they offered such similar features that the price hike wasn't necessary.

Now that there's such a large saving to be had on the RRP, it's hard to say a bad thing against this model, especially if you already have a power meter.

There really are so many features in this compact GPS unit that it's hard to list them all, but rest assured that as well as tracking and measuring all your ride data and metrics, it also delivers power guidance, and real-time stamina insights, like having your own virtual coach and DS on your handlebars.

As a rule of thumb, anything with a discount of over 15% is worth paying attention to. Obviously, the higher the price, the greater the monetary saving, which is why we're constantly scouring big-ticket items for anything above this threshold.

So, I can't impress enough as to exactly how big this deal is on the Garmin Epix Pro watch, to the point that I wonder if someone has got the five and the one the wrong way round.

I've even checked the historic prices, yes, this is the cheapest it's ever been, and directly on the Garmin website, where it's still currently full price!

We've been adding deals all weekend to our live Cyber Monday cycling deals page, and thought we had already seen some impressive discounts, but this one is on a whole new level.

Choosing the best smartwatch for cycling can be tricky. I've personally found the Garmin Fenix series to be a good balance between sports features and everyday wear, mainly because it's easy to use, offers accurate heart rate readings, has excellent battery life, and (most importantly for me) displays big numbers so I can see without my reading glasses.

However, one thing they don't do very well is look good on your wrist when you’re not in sports gear. The Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2), on the other hand, could become the only watch you’ll ever need, but probably couldn't afford - Until now.

To start with, there are three sizes to choose from, making it look less like a sci-fi gadget. Plus, it doesn't scream "look at me, I do sports when I'm not in a suit" aesthetics.

In fact, it has a watch face that resembles a classic submariner. How it transforms from a stylish watch to detailed mapping apps or turn-by-turn multi-band GPS navigation still surprises me.

As expected from anything from the house of Garmin, this watch will be the gold standard in performance. It offers up to 16 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, along with training metrics, recovery insights, the Garmin ECG app, a visual race predictor, ClimbPro, and even a multisport auto transition to switch between your pre-chosen sports so you don't have to remember to record your race or splits.

I've been keeping a watchful eye on all money-saving offers for the past fortnight, and sharing the best Cyber Monday cycling deals here.

But this one stood out as such an incredible offer, I had to (no pun intended) shine a spotlight on it.

The Magicshine Allty 1500S really stood out for Andy during testing because its light settings were not only extremely bright but also customisable via the Magicshine app.

On paper, this might seem like a strange feature, especially since the light is so simple to operate as a standalone unit. However, realising that you can adjust the light to suit your riding conditions—whether to reduce or maximise power—makes this a nearly bespoke option.

There's even a swappable battery system, making it ideal for long adventures where extra run time is needed, or charging options are limited.

This feature alone would have been perfect for 24-hour bike races or challenging Audax events, where you're riding from dawn until well after dusk. Calculating riding time and daylight to conserve battery life—especially when you're already mentally exhausted from the effort—is easier said than done.

Having a spare battery to switch over to is brilliant. In fact, I wonder why this has not been done before.

The only reason this light didn't win the overall best front bike light award was that the RAVEMEN K1400 was cheaper. With this outstanding 50% discount, however, the title now firmly goes to the Magicshine Allty 1500S.

Even though I've been riding for over a decade, I went through the same process many cyclists go through, of trying many pairs of shoes before finding my 'Cinderella' pair, the Lake CX238.

And, they're now 33% off as part of the Sigma Sports Black Friday deals - although these end on Sunday, so it's time to act if you want to grab a pair while they've dipped under £200.

This is such a good deal that I might grab a second pair now as I've got on so well with these and can't imagine riding without a pair on my feet.

So why the Lake CX238 shoes? I've tested plenty of shoes in my time as a roadie, starting with some Louis Garneau shoes with a dodgy plastic buckle, before moving on to some more stylish Fizik shoes. But after a few years of discomfort and hot spots on my feet, I pulled the plug and went to a bike fitter, who recommended I try the Lake range.

Its off-road sibling, the MX238, has made its way into our best gravel shoes guide, but it's the road version, the CX238, that takes the crown in my personal list of the best road shoes.

The CX238 isn't a top of the range racing shoe, but for 95% of cyclists, I'd say they offer more than enough performance. Unless you live in the Arctic Circle and need some proper winter shoes, that is...

The dual boa dial system really helps achieve the optimal fit and allows mid-ride adjustment when your feet swell after a few hours in the saddle. They're also available in a few different colours - I have a black pair because I live in the north east and summer lasts 3 days rather than 3 months.

But for the more stylish riders, there are white variants, too. And there are plenty of sizes, including half sizes. The shoes come with a stiff carbon sole, so there's no power transfer lost through the pedals, and the upper is made from a really durable leather. I got my first pair of these a good few years ago, and they're still going strong now.

When I first arrived here in February 2019, the cold weather delivered a severe shock to my system and quickly showed flaws in my winter cycling clothing wardrobe. I've been very impressed with the Perfetto Ros 2 gloves and have been using them consistently to complete the Rapha Festive 500, which has been a motivating factor in getting through the tough British winter season. We're big fans of Garmin products here at Cycling Weekly, considering them the performance gold standard of cycling tech. However, such high quality doesn't come cheap.

This means that during sale season, we're always on the lookout for money-saving hacks. When I discovered this hidden gem of a discount, I had to share it.

We last saw the US price for the Garmin Tacx Flux S Smart Trainer back in early October during the Amazon Big Deal Days. In the UK, however, we found no coupon and had to pay full price.

Looking at current offers from all retailers, I initially thought the discounts on this model had disappeared. But I'm excited to share these great deals I found, which match the $399.99 US price from two months ago and offer a £250 saving for UK riders.

While I'm not the world's biggest fan of indoor riding, I'm even slightly less of a fan than riding in all weather now that I'm no longer a dog with a competitive bone to carry.

With winter coming incredibly early this year, we've already seen a few snow and ice days here in the north. I can see that I'm in danger of just taking the main road to my daughter's school and doing little else. So is the MOVE worth it?

Well, I have a KICKR MOVE. When I first tried it out I liked it but wasn't completely sold on it. It's certainly more comfortable but not in a way I felt I could justify the cost.

And then I spent some time on some static, entry level trainers. And as much as I was impressed with their performance, the main effect was to prove actually how much better the more expensive MOVE is. It's just a much more comfortable and realistic riding experience. So, yes, I reckon it's worth it. Especially at 20% off.

A bit like choosing pizza when you head out to eat, selecting new tyres takes a bit of careful thought. There's plenty of options, but what if you try something new and it all goes wrong? Then you have to wait till your next meal out and spend the interim regretting your actions.

On paper, tyres are a disposable item that'll wear out and be replaced – the perfect place to experiment, you might think. But they're not particularly cheap, so not many of us are in a position to correct a poor choice by giving them away and buying something else instead.

So what better opportunity than a Black Friday discount to grab some new rubber at a great price and see how it works out?

And so many of us stick with the same old trusted choice. This certainly applies to me – I was more than happy with my Panaracer GravelKings, and have used them in both the SK (small knobs) and X1 versions and found them great in most conditions.

I rode them for a preview of this year's British Gravel Championships at Dalby Forest in Yorkshire, England, which included a lot of superb gravel doubletrack, as well as a bit of peaty singletrack and tarmac too.

They were perfect for that – and I liked them so much I carried on riding them for the next few months.

Using them in 45mm width, they felt fast enough rolling on the road while at the same time offering superior grip off it, in everything but slimy mud. The tread pattern is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the secret to their success. It features studding of low-profile hexagonal knobs across the centre, with more aggressive knobs at the shoulder. It's the former that allows its proficiency on the tarmac, and those shoulder knobs that instil cornering confidence.

In terms of fitment they went on a breeze, and I had zero punctures (that I knew about – I was running them tubeless).

Right now I'm back using my GravelKing X1s, so the T50s have not replaced them completely. The Panaracer tyres feel a bit more voluminous than the Terrenos in the same width so, while I'll definitely be using the T50s again, I might invest in some 50mm items for that extra bit of cushioning.

And then I think they might just be perfect.

I've already shared a great Black Friday deal on the Frog 53 20" pedal bike, a bike that's brought my son (and his parents) plenty of fun and joy over the last couple of years.

I've just come across the same 15% discount on Frog's newest and smallest pedal bike, the 14" wheeled Frog 38 which we reviewed earlier this year when it was first launched.

The Frog 38 will suit kids with a 38cm inseam, so a child around 3-4 years. It's the smallest pedal bike that we know of, and a good chunk smaller than its predecessor.

This smaller sizing ideal for kids progressing from a standard 12" wheel scoot bike as the size transition is much less meaning they don't have to go through that scary phase when their feet don't touch the ground.

I also really love the easily adjustable saddle and handlebar height as well as brake lever reach. It's so frustrating when I'm teaching kids to ride bikes to see them limited by poor bike design that doesn't fit their small bodies.

I finally got round to getting some AirTags for the family's bikes this summer when my husband was due to fly abroad with his bikes. We figured as well as theft it could come in handy for tracking any wayward luggage.

A multitool should be able to withstand serious use. Lost at the bottom of a backpack for three months? It should survive. Thrown into bike sheds and the back of vans only to end at the bottom of a pile of bikes, cleaning equipment, pumps and mucky end-of-ride clothes? It should emerge unscathed. But my experience of multitools hasn’t been nearly so reliable. One multitool bought from a big brand I won’t name fell apart months into owning it - I needed another multitool to help fix it.

Now my frontal lobe is fully developed, and my chaos slightly more measured, it lives in my saddle bag, a dependable ride-mate ready to help whenever I need.

“I wanted the smallest, simplest tool that had what I needed,” one review reads. “This fits the bill perfectly. I’m not somebody that focuses on grams and lightening everything. But I did want a compact tool. This is excellent. I’ll probably buy another.”

As the person usually responsible for compiling our online tech products roundup, I've found myself writing often of late about the latest electric pump to hit the market. So much so I feel the need to buy my own.

Having scoured our excellent guide to the best electric bike pumps I decided on a couple of models and then crossed my fingers that they either of them would find their way into the Black Friday sales. And, fortunately, they have.

I was, and still am, torn between two models. The Airbank is the cheaper of my two picks, while the Muc-Off inflator has a superior LED display, as well as it's 'best in class' ergonomics. Both have a max pressure of 100psi and each weighs under 100 grams.

Whichever I choose, these pocket rockets have lots going for them when compared to your regular bike pump; fitting easily in a jersey pocket of saddlebag they typically excel at both saving time and energy as well as enabling you to hit your desired pressure target with accuracy.

Certainly, having to inflate a tyre on the side of a road while cars whizz past is one of the least pleasurable elements of any bike ride. While an electric pump can't prevent the puncture itself, it does make light work of the task should it happen, allowing you to get back on the bike in no time. They are also an environmentally-friendly upgrade from the best CO2 inflators, which is another bonus.

While an electric pump will likely never rival the best bike mini pumps when it comes to installing a tubeless tyre, they are the ideal companion to a powerful track pump. I, for one, will glad to have one in my pocket for my next ride. All I need to do now is to decide which model I opt for.

What is it about cyclists and coffee that seem to mean the two things go hand in hand? Admittedly, this isn't a universal truism – I know numerous riders who shun the black stuff completely and yes, I mention them regularly in my prayers.

Of course, coffee is popular anyway. It's not just a cyclist thing, as evidenced by the fact that pretty much every other shop on my local high street (and probably yours) serves it.

But somehow for us bike riders it's just a perfect fit. Drinking a cup of joe is something pleasant to do before your ride, or during it, or after it – and if you really want to live dangerously, all three.

If you venture into the world of espresso there is also a very nerdy yet very fun component to it, involving weights, measurements, timings – just like cycling in fact.

And then of course there is the excuse to have a shiny bit of kit in the corner of your kitchen as well as your garage, and another way to bore your friends to tears. Perfect.

Talking of shiny bits of kit, one of the industry's most popular machines, the Breville / Sage Barista Express, has some great discounts going on this Black Friday weekend, and is reduced on Amazon (US) from $699 to $499, and on Amazon UK from £629 to £449 – a 29% discount in both cases.

For most coffee drinkers – including nerdy espresso fiends – the Barista Express is all the coffee machine you'll ever need. Yes, I have one myself and I use it daily, more than once – I love it.

I'd compare it to a $/£5K road bike – it's a serious bit of kit and is everything most of us will ever need. It's well beyond your basic item in both capability and price and while you could spend more if you wanted to hit pro level, nobody's ever going to pretend it doesn't do a great job.

From bean to cup, the Barista Express does everything, but not in an automatic, one-button-push kind of way. By requiring a reasonable level of input, it satisfies the nerd in us all. Anyone who knows me well will be aware of my allergy to indoor riding. I find the hassle of getting set up usually overrides any joy and endorphins I might gain from the exercise, often starting the ride already stressed.

My immediate reaction on learning that the Domyos EB900 exercise bike from Decathlon was self-powering was one of utter amazement. I genuinely thought Decathlon, we're living in some 'Tron-like' futuristic world. Slightly, disappointingly, this is actually a little more common than I had cared to notice among the best exercise bikes.

It did get me thinking, why don't more of the best indoor smart bikes not use this tech? One of the big issues with many of these exercise bikes and home training systems like Peloton is that while they can be moved around (if you have the muscles to do so), they always need a power source. This can limit where you can set them up.

Enter the Domyos EB900 exercise bike by Decathlon.

While the Domyos is still quite chunky at 40kg, it's reasonably compact at just over a metre long and 55 cm wide. Given that it is on wheels and doesn't require a power source, it could be the perfect exercise bike for those who need to store it away or move it around a garage.

The EB900 actually works much more like one of the best smart bikes than an exercise bike. This is because resistance is controlled electronically. It still features a reasonable 8kg flywheel, which will largely mean a much smoother riding experience, a little like using a magnetic unit, without the big dial to turn. For those who want to take their indoor training to some of the more connected platforms like Zwift or Rouvy, this will mean more accurate data, once you have installed the compatibility app.

I'd been dabbling a bit with waxing my chain for a while; I loved the benefits of a clean and quite drivetrain and thought of better durability (the extra watts were an added bonus too), but it was hard to see past the faff and need for a well-organised system.

Then I researched a tech article on chain waxing and was completely sold on the benefits. I even went as far as stripping and waxing the chain on my 6 year old son's bike (filthy chainring stamps on his legs are a thing of the past). But I still haven't quite mastered the well-organised system. My Freecycle family-sized hotpot and array of old spokes and wire coat hangers don't really match the compact efficiency of a bespoke system.

Elsewhere on Cycling Weekly my colleague Anne-Marie has been raving about Silca's Wax System that she's been using for the last 18 months.

The Silca system is essentially a neat and dinky melting pot, with drip stand and coupler for the chain. You put in the wax, add a Strip Chip to lessen the need for several messy cleaning steps, thread and dip your chain then neatly leave to drip dry. All in something that sits on your counter top and takes up the space of a plate.

As neat and tidy as it is, it's hard to justify a $/£100 cost when my FOC system did the job, just more messily and with more steps than I'd like. I haven't let my dream die though, instead I've just kept an eye out for a discount which could justify a purchase.

And here it is, Silca's Black Friday deal giving up to 30% off in the UK and 20% stateside. I bought mine a couple of days ago and some places are selling out, so you might want to be quick with yours.

Betting on stocks and shares is risky business. There's always a disclaimer that says your investment can go up or down. When you invest in a grown ups bicycle however, depreciation is an expected part of ownership. And it can be a painful reality. To check out deals on our big-kid bikes head over to our live blog, but if you're in the market for a kids bike, hang on here for a second and check out the rationale for this deal.

With kids bikes, good ones change hands in the School car park amongst savvy parents for nearly the price Mum and Dad paid for them.

As a result, quality items, like the Woom 1 from Woom bikes don't come up on sale often, and there's a perfectly good reason for that: they sell out, and don't need to do discounts to shift their stock. The brand features regularly in our reviews.

That means – if you can find a deal – you can invest in one today at a discount, and when you come to sell it, you'll be ahead of the other parents at pick up time and, if you've bought the right brand, you're extremely likely to feel like you made a very good decision.

You just can't do that with many second-hand bikes, such is the level of depreciation on the bigger wheeled items.

With quality kids bikes it's completely different. Need proof? A quick glance at Facebook Marketplace, and you have five Woom 1's advertised here locally at £180-£200. Whilst other models from other brands have tanked, selling for £20 or £30.

With a Black Friday deal today, the retail price brand new is down to $236 (around, that's only a 5% discount, which doesn't sound a lot when we're finding deals of 50% and 60% on other 'grown up' cycling lines, but with these bikes, that means you can enjoy a brand new model, with all the guarantees and customer service Woom are well known for, and sell it when you're done with it, for something very close to what you paid for it.

If you make the price that five advertisers are asking on Marketplace for a second-hand model today, you could find you have spent less than $50 on one of the best kids balance bikes out there.

After Black Friday and in the run up to Christmas, they're not only likely to sell out of their most popular lines, this may also be the last time this year we see this kind of deal from Woom so act fast.

So there's a bike lover in your life, and you need to buy them a present. That should be easy, right? Not necessarily.

Often it can feel like us cyclists already own every gadget they need. We can be a picky bunch, too. Present-wise, what that tends to leave is gimmicky throwaways (see: bicycle-shaped pizza cutter), which will make the person smile on Christmas day, but will likely never get touched afterwards.

To help you find something useful, I asked my colleagues – some of whom have ridden and raced thousands of miles this year – what they really want for Christmas. Here's what they said.

Honourable mentions

These days, there's no such thing as a bad product; small nuances in functionality and fit finish are usually the only factors separating the podium positions in many of our buyers' guides - this goes for bikes, tyres, wheels, and even the best bike computers. I recently tested the Garmin Edge 850 and, while it boasts the best screen in class and is a super-refined unit in many ways, I was let down by its battery life and pricing.

In that respect, the Hammerhead Karoo 3 provides a worthy alternative to the Edge 850, with battery life and sticker price that put it ahead in those areas on the scoring sheet. Since its acquisition by SRAM, Hammerhead has forged ahead and improved drastically, providing cyclists with another worthy alternative to the perennial onslaught from Garmin and Wahoo. While the Karoo 3 is already priced well below both the Wahoo Roam 3 and Garmin Edge 850, Sigma Sports has discounted it even further this Black Friday.

I'm sure some readers will be curious as to where that Karoo name came from, so here's a little backstory. The Karoo is a semi-arid to desert region in South Africa known for its unique landscapes and diverse plant and animal life. I recently traversed this region by bicycle for the first time during Gravel Burn (you can read about my experience here), and sampled both the Little and Great Karoo. So why the Karoo name? Well, Hammerhead founder, Pieter Morgan, is a South African and grew up riding bikes all over the country, including this region and found that this best describes the computer and its rugged, go-anywhere functionality.

And rugged it is with a hardy, durable housing, prominent buttons and a responsive touchscreen. Having tested the Hammerhead Karoo 3 against its main competitors, it's clear the company has closed the gap; this holds true across pricing, navigational performance, and overall functionality. While its battery life isn't the best, it outperforms the brand-new Garmin Edge 850 but falls short of Wahoo's Roam 3's 25 hours. It's clear there isn't much separating these three cycling computers, so whichever option you choose, you won't go wrong. At this price, however, if I were on the hunt for a new cycling computer, I'd go for the Hammerhead Karoo 3.

It's rare to come across a family whose child hasn't had a bike on their Christmas list at one time or another, so Black Friday is a great time to pick up a good deal for them (and find one for yourself on our Black Friday cycling deals Live page).

As a Bikeability and kids' cycling instructor, I see kids ride a huge range of bikes, from the ridiculous to the sublime. But after my son got the chance to review the Frog 53, there's only one brand I consistently recommend when people ask me about the best kids' bikes.

The 53 is Frog’s smallest 20” wheeled and geared bike for kids with a 50-65cm inseam (typically 5-7 year olds).

It was my son's first foray onto a 'big' bike with gears, so I was a little nervous about how he might fare. I shouldn't have worried, as soon as he climbed aboard, it was clear to see just how stable and easy to ride the Frog is. In fact, it didn't take him long to be able to pull one-handed / no-footed tricks and over a year and a half later, he's riding half the way to school no-handed (and pleasingly, the bike still has plenty of growing room).

It's easy to see bikes like this as a big spend when you can get cheaper elsewhere, but I reckon, having a well-designed kids ' specific bike is worth every penny. They're easier to ride, they're much more fun too and - when it comes to it - the warranty and resale value mean your investment holds much of its value in the years to come, especially on this Black Friday deal.

British company Restrap has quickly established a reputation for high-performing, well-thought-out bikepacking gear. It’s high quality, handmade in the UK and already competitively priced, which means it’s rare to see any discounts, until this Black Friday (and even then, it’s kept them pretty quiet). This weekend, Restrap is offering 20% reductions site-wide and up to 70% off on single products.

Restrap has a huge range of bikepacking bags and accessories to suit whatever bike, length of trip, or snack requirements you might have. My colleagues here at Cycling Weekly have loved all of the Restrap bags they’ve tested as part of our bikepacking bag buyer’s guide, from “the best handlebar bag … we’ve yet come across” to the “rugged and practical” Frame Bag.

I’ve used a Restrap large saddle pack, which I bought for my first multi-day bikepacking trip back in 2017, and last year added a top tube bag and a bar bag to my collection. I love their adaptability across bikes and that they’re incredibly easy to fit and pack, even with cold, wet and tired hands.

As a parent, multi-day bikepacking trips are more of a rarity these days, so my most-used bag has become the Race Top Tube Bag. It might be designed for ultra-distance racing, but it gets used on most of my day-to-day rides at a more sedentary pace as well as longer jaunts.

It’s hard to pick just one reason why I like the Race Top Tube bag, and so I won’t; here’s a list instead. Firstly, it’s easy to open and close when you’re riding with big loops on the two-way zip. It’s really nice and stable, and its reinforced sides stop it from sloping all over your top tube and jumbling the contents. It’s got plenty of capacity for a good few hours of snacks, and your phone and the side mesh pockets are a good place for mucky gel wrappers and other rubbish (mine is currently impregnated with mushy banana skin). It’s also really easy to fit and remove, so I can easily swap between bikes.

I find the 1.5 litre version suits most of my rides and all of my bikes, but if you want more snacks or have a short top tube, it comes in 2 litre and 1.2 litre sizes too.

And although I’ve not used it for my Race Top Tube Bag, I must mention Restrap’s repair and replacement service. I have recently had the buckle and dry bag replaced on my eight-year-old saddle pack free of charge, even though I’d have counted this as expected wear and tear and therefore something I’d need to pay for. Added to that, Restrap didn’t charge me for the repair of my bar bag holster, despite its damage, most definitely due to user error.

I totally understand that bikepacking isn't for everyone, but the Restrap top tube pack is ideal for just general riding, too. If your experience of this year's winter has been anything like mine so far, you'll have gotten away relatively lightly. It's still November after all, and the coldest, sharpest claws of the season are yet to dig in. We can, presumably, expect that to happen sometime in January.

The good news – and you'll know this even if you haven't been riding long – is that the kit you pull on before you head out the door can make a huge difference. In the winter, everything you wear, from gloves to socks, can make a difference, but there's nothing more important than the outer layer on your top half – your jacket.

In terms of bang for buck, the Endura Windchill II has always been right up there, and now it has been discounted by up to 40% for Black Friday, which means you can buy yourself some winter toastiness for as little as $101 – that's some major savings on the $169.99 SRP.

I own the original Windchill jacket – and now the mercury is falling, I regularly use it too. It's very similar to the Windchill II on sale today, with the updated version being more ergonomic and with better wind protection.

Our tester took the Windchill II on what they said was a slow ride in the snow and ice with zero-degree wind chill, and reported that it was "plenty warm enough with just a thermal base layer". Impressive – but my own experience with it definitely backs that up. We've had a nasty little cold snap in the UK over the past 10 days or so, and when I headed outdoors earlier this week (there's only so much Zwifting you can do, right?) I knew exactly which jacket to reach for.

During the hour I was out, the Windchill kept me perfectly warm, with just a long-sleeve baselayer underneath. There's something about its fleecy interior that reaches down the arms, too, which is cosseting and really enhances wind protection.

Beyond pure warmth, features on the Windchill II include underarm zips for ventilation as and when required, three pockets on the rear and one on the chest (with zip), and a longer back for on-bike ergonomics.

Colour-wise, there's something for everyone, with all black, super-visible fluoro yellow, and a rather natty 'pomegranate'. Take your pick!

The fit was great off the bike as well as on it, meaning I could happily wear them in the pub in the evening of my multi-day trip, or more mundanely walking into the office after my morning commute since I've been home.

Given their water-resistance, they can be a bit sweaty riding in warmer weather but given their adaptability this compromise feels well worth it.

We rated this product the best value direct-drive trainer on the market. It's responsive, accurate, and Zwift compatible, with specs at the level of its more expensive equivalents.

Yesterday, Amazon US slashed the price of this trainer to its lowest price ever – below $350 – and it was no surprise when it sold out in hours on Thursday. If you missed that deal, you can still pick up the Wahoo Kickr Core from Competitive Cyclist and Backcountry for a dollar or so over $400 – that's almost $135 off the RRP.
