For many professional cyclists and cycling fans alike, the cobbled Classics are the best time of the year.
Yes, the Grand Tours have a certain magic and are great to watch, but the spring races really are a step above. Across three weeks a GC contender might have a bad day and then more than make up for it the following week: there are no chances for redemption in the one-day races.
The changeable weather and gruelling parcours make for some gladiatorial battles between the hard men of the peloton. Throw into the mix the testing cobbled roads of Belgium and northern France and you’ve got a recipe for some brilliant racing.
Although this year’s races might not be described as vintage editions, and will soon be absorbed into the wider general history rather than standing out in their own right, they were still a fantastic spectacle.
