We’ve previously raved about the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX, but with the current iteration of the frame now a couple of years old, it’s certainly been due for an update.
Step forward Nairo Quintana at the Route du Sud, who appears to have been riding a new version of Canyon’s lightweight climber’s frame, which looks to have slightly boxier tube profiles compared to the old Ultimate, more reminiscent of the company’s Aeroad CF SLX, suggesting that Canyon has taken aerodynamics into account when designing the frame.

This approach is similar to the one taken by Merida with its new 680g Scultura launched at the Giro d’Italia last month, which reduced weight over the previous Scultura, while also taken on some of the details of the Merida Reacto aero bike.
The single main area that looks to have been changed is the junction point between the seat tube, top tube, and seatstay. From what we can see, the seat stay appears to join with the top tube slightly forward of the seat tube, rather than all three tubes joining at a single point. If the concept is similar to the one seen on the new Lapierre Xelius SL, this design should help to improve comfort while simultaneously reducing weight.
The fork also seems to have been redesigned, with broader shoulders compared to the previous model, possible improving aerodynamics and making concessions for the recent trend for wider tyres.
We’re expecting full details of the new frame from Canyon in the next couple of days.
