Are you inspired to cycle on the continent?
Perhaps it’s the thought of enjoying the delicious French cuisine whilst becoming fitter and leaner. Maybe it’s the dream of empty roads through sleepy, unspoilt villages on a short five-day ride in Western France or on a macho long distance leg burner in the Picos de Europa mountain ranges in Northern Spain.

Taking your bike across the Channel with Brittany Ferries could not be easier. Simply walk it onboard through the car entrance, lock it to the points provided, then relax whilst enjoying a daytime or overnight crossing. Unlike planes, there’s no need to dismantle the bike to box it up, or to wonder whether it will arrive from the luggage hold in one piece, if at all.
And to help you on your way, Brittany Ferries has devised a selection of cycle routes through Brittany and Normandy. You can achieve each within five days, combine them, or use as a base for an even longer experience.
Brittany Ferries can even arrange your stopovers en route, with a wide range of hotels, cottages and campsites throughout Western France.
Given the Tour de France is starting in Yorkshire in 2014, it is possible to be involved locally and then follow in the cyclists’ footsteps once you cross the channel. Taking your bicycles with you means lots of extra exploring. The Tour will travel through the commemorative battlefields and cemeteries of Northern France, in particular Ypres and Arras where commemorations will be taking place throughout the year in acts of remembrance.
Said a spokesperson from the Tour, ‘It would have been unacceptable for the Tour not to commemorate the Centenary of the start of World War I in its own way’.
With a route from Portsmouth International Port to Caen, you will be able to visit the historic Normandy coast and D-Day landing beaches and be part of the local commemorations of this world event.
Brittany Ferries also has crossings from Portsmouth to Cherbourg, Le Havre and St Malo.
