Halfords’ pricing mistake almost lets people buy an £800 frame for a penny

Customers foiled when Halfords realised the error

We can’t imagine that the Cinelli Mash Parallax frame is one of Halfords’ biggest sellers, which must have made it a bit of a surprise when a huge flurry of orders came in for the track bike over the weekend. The reason for this rush of interest: a pricing error that meant the £800 frame was shown as being available for just a penny.

News of this bargain spread quickly online on the Singletrack forum, although some seem to have been put off by the £4.99 delivery charge, while others decided to enquire whether the frame was eligible for the 10 per cent discount that all British Cycling members get when shopping at Halfords.

However, Halfords decided to spoil everyone’s fun by sending out emails saying that the price listed for the frame was due to an “administrative pricing error” and that it would be cancelling orders as per its terms and conditions.

Most people were left disappointed, but one user, with the highly witty username of ‘cyclingweakly’, claimed to have actually received the bike after going to collect it from his local store, before going a little quiet when others asked him to post a photo to prove it.
