Italian team to ride speed suit at the world champs

The Italian national team will ride in Castelli’s San Remo speed suit at the World Championships in Copenhagen later this month.

The garment is marketed as a ‘skin suit for road racing’, and first came to prominence at Paris-Roubaix where Johan Vansummeren rode it to victory.

The one-piece suite is claimed to offer an aerodynamic advantage, saving riders 12-15 watts per hour when riding at 40km/h compared to a normal jersey and shorts combination.

The San Remo suit has a full length zip, and the front panel of the jersey is not stitched to the shorts. This allows a rider to unzip the jersey both to keep cool and answer the call of nature. The back and sides of the jersey are stitched directly in to the shorts therefore offering better airflow around the torso. It also has the three standard pockets at the rear.

The Italian team is set to be announced later today with Daniele Bennati as the team leader for the flat course in Denmark.

The World Championships start on Monday, September 19 and this year incorporate the junior road and time trial events along with the under-23 and senior men and women.
