When Bradley Wiggins broke the Hour Record last June he used a special Muc-Off chain that cost an incredible £6000 to produce. But now Muc-Off has taken what it learned from working with Wiggins to start selling chains which have been treated to a similar level of care and attention.
Thankfully, the one of these chains won’t set you back £6,000 (although it still won’t be cheap at £135-£140), but at least it will, according to Muc-Off, save you up to six watts. Or at least it will for the 250-400 miles until the special treatment wears off.

The Muc-Off Nanotube Chain Optimisation, as it is called, is a treatment that is applied to a Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo chain to keep it running smoother and quicker compared to if you just bought one on its own and stuck it on your bike without anything more than a quick squirt of lube.
Watch: how to lube your chain
As described by Muc-Off, “each chain is painstakingly speed graded and run-in under load during which data is taken to find its optimum. Now it’s sonic cleaned in several formulas and hand treated with the Nanotube formula, then nanotube particles are applied.”
This treatment will apparently last for 400 miles in dry conditions and 250 miles in wet conditons “with no severe dropoff in performance”. But once the treatment has worn off then you should apply Muc-Off’s Nanotube Speed Film Lube (£35) which will “bring your chain back to within 1-2 watts of when it’s at its optimum”.
