Team Sky has assisted component manufacturer Pro in its development of a new three-spoke aerodynamic front wheel designed for time trials.
The British-based WorldTour squad used the wheel during the opening team time trial of the Vuelta a Espana on Saturday.

According to Pro, the new wheel is ‘the most aerodynamic time trial wheel in the world in combination with supreme handling’. Aerodynamics aren’t everything, though, as Sky put in a cautious run to place 11th in the stage behind winners Movistar.
Sky’s Chris Froome said: “When I first tested the PRO 3-spoke wheel it immediately felt good. The handling has really improved. It is more manoeuvrable and easier to steer. It does not have that jerky feeling coming out of the corners which we had in the past.”
The main carbon-fibre section of the wheel uses a monocoque construction and features a Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 hub. The rim is 65mm deep with a surface to improve aerodynamics that tapers from 30mm to 28mm at the braking surface. The valve is positioned behind one of the spokes to prevent it disturbing air flow. All-in weight is a claimed 740g.
The wheel will be available to buy in June 2015.
