In the ‘race of truth’ every second counts. Despite three weeks of racing, an individual time trial is often the only way to separate the top riders from each other, as one man turns himself inside-out against the clock to extract every possible advantage.
You can rest assured that if the rider is prepared to put themselves on the line like that, their bike will have to be up to scratch.

This is Richie Porte of Team Sky’s Pinarello Bolide. Although it was only launched last year, it has still had a few upgrades to ensure it’s ready for this summer’s campaign.
This is typical of the effort that the top teams make to extract every last second, be it through aerodynamic drag reduction or set-up, to ensure the rider is in the best possible shape.
This may be Porte’s ‘second bike’ but it has the exact same set-up as his race machine. After all, if he has a problem mid-event he’ll need to step straight off one and on to the other without adjusting a single thing.
