With four wins from four events so far, Matt Bottrill (I Ride RT) looks set to strengthen his grip on the RTTC-Rudy Project National Time Trial Series when he rides the fifth round in Worcestershire on Saturday.
Bottrill is last man off in the event on the K22/16 course, which starts out from Great Witley and circles round on minor roads to the south east. The men and espoirs will cover two laps and cover 33 miles, while the other categories will tackle one circuit.
But while Bottrill has been largely head and shoulders above the opposition in previous rounds, he may well not have it all his own way on Saturday.
Adeo Cadence rider Ben Anstie has a 25-mile personal best time of 49-19, so is well capable of pushing Bottrill for victory, while others who will be challenging for the podium include Sigma Sport’s Wouter Sybrandy from Middlesex, and Sri Chinmoy CT’s Tejvan Pattinger from Oxford. And Sybrandy’s young team-mate at Sigma, Russell Hampton will take some beating.
In the women’s event, Team Jewson-MI Racing’s Michelle King looks set to take her second victory of the 2011 series following victory in round one.
She could move up to second in the overall tables if she wins in Worcestershire, but Lynn Hamel (Herbalife-Wheelbase) will be intent on holding on to second spot.
The first riders are off at 12noon on Saturday, while Bottrill is off at 1.40pm.
Elsewhere, multiple national title holder Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickvit RT) is staying relatively local this weekend, and will tackle the Fenland Clarion 25 at Sawtry.
The Cambridgeshire resident holds course record for the N1/25c which is being used on Saturday, and will be hoping for good weather this weekend so he can try to lower the current mark of 50-49.
Further North, Derbyshire is the place to be if you want to see some of the country’s top riders tackling a 50-mile event.
The Burton and District CA event at Etwall, Derbyshire, starts at 2pm and boasts a full field of 120 riders including Nik Bowdler (Team Pedal Revolution.co.uk) who is clearly in good form having been one third of the team which broke the 100-mile competition record last weekend.
UTAG Yamaha.com pair Julian Jenkinson and Stephen Whitewick will also tackle the course to Blythe Bridge, while evergreen Ian Cammish (Planet X) and Joel Wainman (Team Swift) will also be hoping for podium finishes.
Bowdler should have a slightly easier ride 24 hours later, when he tackles the Pennine CC 50 on the Dishforth to Knayton course in North Yorkshire.
A field of just 60 are down to ride the event, and the pick of the others who are likely to get closest to Bowdler include Leamington A&CC’s Rob Weare.
