British time trial preview (July 9-10)

The country’s best riders are in action in the National 100-Mile Championships on Saturday, where reigning champion Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickvit) will be aiming to take a sixth title.

The event based in Ripon, North Yorkshire, has attracted a full field of 150 riders to the V278 course, but Hutchinson will have to be at his best to be sure of securing a third consecutive win.

Julian Jenkinson (UTAG was more than 15 minutes behind Hutch in last year’s event, and will be looking to get closer to his rival this time, while also returning is Andy Bason (Team Pedal who was third last year.

After his win in the Andy Wilson Memorial 50 in North Yorkshire last weekend, former 100-mile champion Kevin Dawson (Sportscover) is back to challenge for an eighth title.

Others who could challenge for a spot on the podium include in-form Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) who was sixth last year, as well as Team Swift’s Joel Wainman.

The women’s race looks likely to be a battle between Born 2 Bike rider Lynne Taylor and Rebecca Slack (The Altitude Centre).

While most of the fast riders are in action in the title race, there are still some good fields entered for other events across the country.

Nick Dwyer (Lewes Wanderers) is last man off in the East Sussex CA 50 at Maresfield on Sunday, while Rob Pelham (Lewes Wanders) and Iain Brogden (Eastbourne Rovers) will also be aiming for the podium.

There is also a quality field for the Manchester and District TTA 100 at Marthall in Cheshire on Sunday.

Charles Taylor (South Pennine RC) is last man off, but he will be pushed all the way by the likes of Congleton CC pair Alf Hilton Neil Skellern.

Olympic track ace Wendy Houvenaghel (Bike Chair Ricci) looks set to be the star attraction in the Sleaford Wheelers 25 in Leicestershire on Sunday.

The silver medallist in the 3km pursuit discipline at the Beijing Olympics, Houvenaghel will provide a stern test for the majority of the field – male of female – in the event at Donington.

Matt Sinclair (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) and Julian Ramsbottom (I Ride RT) are among the top male riders.

And in Wiltshire, Stuart Dodd ( looks likely to be the man to beat in Chippenham and District Wheelers’ 25 at Ashton Keynes on Sunday.

He is last off in a field of more than 70 riders for the event, which has also attracted entries from Ben Anstie (Adeo Cadence) and Rob Pears (Bath CC).
