Stage eight

Date: Sunday July 8

Start: Belfort

Length: 157.5km

Type: Medium mountains

After yesterday’s aperitif, today’s ride introduces real unpleasantness – seven climbs which kick off after 20km and get tougher as the stage progresses.

This short stage is the trickiest test so far, jammed with short, sharp hills, the day before the key time trial.

It will be hard to control for any team; chances are a break will get away then fall apart as the leaders gather at the front. The final first-category climb is only 16km from the line.
