Cycling Weekly February 07 2019

Cycling Weekly magazine February 07 2019 issue, on sale from Thursday priced £3.25

Letter from the editor

For this week’s magazine we set ourselves the unenviable exercise of compiling a list of the most important cyclists of all time. We limited ourselves to 40 but we could have easily gone up to 100, given the myriad riders who initially spring to mind.

It’s not a list of the most successful —that would have been relatively easy — or the most popular, but those who have changed, shaped or influenced the sport, and the only thing we did all agree on was who came in at number one.

The most enjoyable part of pulling these lists together is the arguments that we have when deciding on the order. They started weeks ago, and will no doubt carry on long after the magazine is off sale.

Seeing as we can’t agree (we finalised the list with some hard-fought negotiation and begrudging compromise) we don’t expect you to agree with us either, at least not on every last placing. So be sure to let us know who you think should have won, who should have been placed higher or lower, or who we missed out.

I do hope there’ll be a few surprises in there for you, as there were for me. The trailblazing Lady Harburton for example. If you’ve never heard of her, turn to page 21 and start reading.
