Sooner or later you’ll probably end up coming off, especially if you race. Unfortunately, unless you forget to unclip at traffic lights – my favourite trick – it usually happens at speed too which means that you end up cut up and losing some skin.

But the latest innovation making its way into cycling clothing is fabric with anti-abrasion skin protection technology which is built into the 2016 Look Replica Team Aero bib shorts. You’re most likely to end up on your side if you do hit the deck, so there’s a panel of this fabric running down the outside edge of the shorts from the waistband to the top of the leg grippers. It has a hexagonal pattern and Look claims it increases abrasion resistance by 40% over standard lycra.

Otherwise, the front and the back of the bottom section of the shorts are made from standard lightweight lycra. There’s a chamois with a built-in gel insert which isn’t too thick but has its padding in all the right places to keep you comfortable on the bike, with a pronounced central pressure relief channel running its length.

The bibs of the Look Replica Team Aero bib shorts are made of two different lightweight mesh fabrics for excellent ventilation and although the straps are quite narrow and edged, I found that they did not bunch or dig into my shoulders and remained comfortable.

The leg grippers are very lightweight with no bottom seam and have lots of ventilation built into them and an unobtrusive silicone gripper band near the hem. They’re the only adornment to the otherwise all-black trim, with the right leg bearing Look’s logo and the left its famous multicoloured stripes.

I’ve enjoyed putting in the miles in the Look Replica Team Aero bib shorts, which have been comfortable for extended outings. There’s a matching Replica Team Aero jersey with a lightweight mesh back, which has skin protection fabric built into the shoulders.
