Scott Plasma RC: ‘Designed for the top step’

We take a close look at the Scott Plasma RC time trial bike

The bike, ridden by the Mitchelton-Scott team and also the Brownlee brothers, is built around the Plasma 5 frameset which has been designed with input from aerodynamicist Simon Smart.

The design process featured extensive aerodynamic studies, with the frame designed to be more aero with a moving rider on it than without. Computational fluid dynamics modelling followed by testing in the wind tunnel and simulated real-world conditions informed its shape.

Fuel storage creates a nose cone and a ‘bento box’, both of which improve aerodynamics and are perfectly legal in UK events run under CTT rules and regs.

To allow a wide range of riders with varying morphologies to find an optimised position, Scott has paid plenty of attention to the contact points and the ergonomics of the Plasma 5 via a large range of adjustment of the saddle position and cockpit. In addition, Scott offers three base bar options and two different stems: one that runs flush with the top tube, or the one pictured here, that provides 45mm of additional stack.

Fairings cover the integrated brakes, resulting in a beautifully sleek machine and making a game of ‘spot the cable’ very difficult.

Scott offers two models based on the Plasma 5 frame: the top-end Plasma Premium costs £10,999 and is Dura-Ace Di2 equipped with a Zipp 404 front wheel and 808 rear. The RC we have here retails for £6,599 and comes equipped with Ultegra Di2 (including the extremely useful satellite shifters on the base bar). The rear brake is Shimano direct mount, while the front is a dual-pivot centre-pull design for optimum aerodynamics.

Glancing at the spec sheet, the wheels may look low end, especially when compared with the Plasma Premium, but are deliberately supplied as training hoops. By not supplying high-end wheels Scott keeps the price down. The rationale behind the decision is that most time triallists purchasing a top frame like this will most likely already own a set of high-end race wheels — such as the Reynolds Aero 80s that we’ve shot it with here.


Scott specs Syncros wheels on Formula hubs as a set of training wheels on the assumption that a serious time triallist spending over £6K on a bike already has a set of favourite race wheels — like the Reynolds Aero 80s we dressed it with for our shoot.


Profile makes the carbon Plasma 5 Aeria base bar and tri-bars, which have a 30° bend. There’s a high level of integration at the front end, with neither gear nor
brake cabling visible.


Shimano Ultegra Di2 has all the functionality of Dura-Ace but for a much lower price. With the satellite shifters on the base bar — incredibly useful for climbing — this is
a great spec.
