Rochelle Gilmore now runs the women’s team Wiggle-High5, but counts a raft of wins in her own palmarès.

Looking back at her racing days, Gilmore tells us about a hard UCI World Cup race from 2005 where she was able to push herself well beyond her limits.

She won the World Cup, but collapsed on the finish line and was unable to believe just how far she’d been able to push herself into the red.

More recently, the Australian rode L’Étape du Tour on Alpe d’Huez as an invited guest of Tour de France organisers ASO.

The conditions got to Gilmore – who comments that she was underprepared in terms of clothing, and she got so cold on the descent that it became dangerous.

Determined to finish, she kept riding and made it to the end despite how hard the ride had been. The sportive was the most mentally challenging day she’s had on the bike.
