Hayes shows us the tricks of his trade, including just what he uses an old salad cream bottle for in his every day job – a hint: what he’s filled it with is not edible.

While many mechanics may be a bit cautious about naming and shaming riders who make their lives that little bit more difficult, Hayes is quick to respond with who he thinks is the most difficult rider on the Madison Genesis squad, with a certain Liverpudlian taking the honour.

All of Hayes’ hard work must be paying off, though, with Madison Genesis won the Pearl Izumi Tour Series, taking the team honours in five of the ten rounds, beating out One Pro Cycling in the standings.

The team took its place alongside many of its domestic rivals in the Tour of Britain, allowing its riders to gain valuable experience against some of the best WorldTour riders.
