Secrets of the toolbox: Team Wiggins (video)

Team Wiggins mechanic Martyn Ashfield talks us through the behind the scenes work involved in running cycling teams

Coming to the end of its first season, Team Wiggins has burst onto the domestic racing scene this year. Its most recent result has been the team’s biggest of the season when Owain Doull took third overall at the Tour of Britain.

Named after and starring Sir Bradley Wiggins, like all others this team is only as strong as its support staff. For this outing of ‘secrets of the toolbox’ we spoke to Martyn Ashfield about the tricks and tips he uses to get the bikes ready for Wiggo et al to race on.

One of his interesting anecdotes tells the story of how his changed a pair of handlebars mid-race in the back of a team car.

Ashfield tells us how he tries to stay abreast of any new technology in the peloton, his example being his interest in Shimano Di2 even though his team uses SRAM.

Despite working not presently working with them he isn’t partisan in his support of riders such as Geraint Thomas and the Yates twins, whose success he’s very pleased to have witnessed.

He’s living the dream of being involved in racing, and long may it continue.
