One of the raft of new recruits to join Team Sky after the end of the 2015 season was Danny van Poppel, who left his older brother Boy and previous team Trek-Segafredo to join the British squad.

The young Dutch rider won a stage of the 2015 Vuelta a España and has many stages of smaller races to his name. Part of Team Sky’s wider Classics group, he was part of the squad that helped Ian Stannard to third place in Paris-Roubaix.

In this video the 22-year-old tells us about an injury he picked up on the cobbled stage of the 2014 Tour de France.

On a wet day in Northern France, fellow Dutchman Lars Boom rode away to a famous stage win, but the day didn’t go so well for van Poppel.

The rider states that a collision near a roundabout with Alejandro Valverde resulted in the Movistar rider’s big ring slicing into van Poppel’s leg. He withdrew from the race two days later.

With disc brakes making the headlines due to a reported injury caused by a rotor going into a rider’s leg, it’s interesting to hear of a similar incident involving a part of the bike that the UCI can’t suspend the use of.
