The rider states that a collision near a roundabout with Alejandro Valverde resulted in the Movistar rider’s big ring slicing into van Poppel’s leg. He withdrew from the race two days later.
With disc brakes making the headlines due to a reported injury caused by a rotor going into a rider’s leg, it’s interesting to hear of a similar incident involving a part of the bike that the UCI can’t suspend the use of.
