The first stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour saw a dramatic finale, with Mark Cavendish winning the stage while a crash took out a number of riders behind including Owain Doull, Marcel Kittel, Alex Dowsett and Caleb Ewan.
On returning to his team car after the stage, Doull found that something had sliced through his left shoe, even drawing blood from his foot.
Speaking to journalists, Doull blamed the injury on the the disc brakes on Marcel Kittel’s bike, which he said had gone through his shoe after they both got caught up in the late crash.
This isn’t the first time that a rider has blamed an injury on a disc brake, with the UCI suspending its trial of the braking technology after Movistar rider Fran Ventoso made a similar allegation at the 2016 Paris-Roubaix.
The Abu Dhabi Tour will continue on Friday with the 155km stage two, with Doull likely to be fit enough to take to the start line.
