Billed as a sprinters’ stage, the third day of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour turned out to be no such thing – even though it was won by sprinter-of-the-moment Caleb Ewan (Orica-GreenEdge).

Ewan was made to work harder than usual for his eighth victory of the year so far after finding himself in a group of six riders including overall contenders Peter Kennaugh (Team Sky) and Jack Bobridge (Trek-Segafredo), as well as Tour de France champion Chris Froome (Team Sky).

Ewan had team-mate Jack Haig for company, and the two Australian riders managed to hold off attacks by both Kennaugh and Bobridge.

Once Ewan launched his sprint in the final 500 metres, no one was going to catch him – although American Tanner Putt (UntiedHealthcare) had a good go.

Kennaugh maintains his lead in the race ahead of Froome, with Bobridge now up to third with two stages of the the race remaining.
