Northwave's Extreme X shoes are designed to conquer the off-road

For riders chasing speed on gravel tracks, forest fire roads or cross-country race circuits, footwear is one of the most important pieces of the performance puzzle. A good off-road shoe needs to balance stiffness for efficient power transfer with the stability and comfort required for long hours on rough terrain.

Northwave’s new Extreme X shoes have been developed with that type of riding in mind. Sitting in Northwave’s top-of-the-range Extreme line of footwear and clothing, it is a high-end off-road shoe designed for riders who expect race-level efficiency but want the versatility to move between disciplines. Be that lining up for an XC event, tackling a marathon mountain bike race or pushing the pace on a fast gravel route, the aim is simple: maximise pedalling performance while keeping the foot stable and comfortable over long distances.

The foundation of the shoe is the Hyperlight HT sole, constructed from unidirectional carbon fibre. Given that stiffness is one of the defining characteristics of a performance shoe, particularly when riding at high intensity, this was a key performance goal for the Extreme X. Every watt generated by the rider should move cleanly through the shoe and into the pedal, rather than being absorbed through flex in the sole.

Northwave says the Hyperlight HT platform pushes that idea further, delivering 169% more torsional stiffness and 41% more compressive stiffness compared with previous designs. On the trail, that translates into a very direct connection with the pedals. During hard accelerations, steep climbs, or sustained efforts, the stiff sole allows more of the rider’s effort to contribute directly to forward momentum.

But off-road riding rarely stays confined to the pedals. Whether it is a steep hike-a-bike section in an XC race or a muddy ramp on a gravel route, there are moments when traction matters. For those situations the Extreme X uses replaceable rubber and TPU inserts on the sole, designed to add grip and stability when walking while preserving the stiffness of the carbon platform.

In addition to focussing on power transfer, efficiency is another aspect of shoe performance. Keeping the foot properly supported during intense pedalling efforts is key to this. To address efficiency, Northwave has introduced what it calls the High Tail system, an asymmetric structure that extends up along the outer side of the heel.

The High Tail design wraps around the rear of the foot to provide targeted external support. The intention is to hold the heel more securely in place and reduce lateral movement during the pedal stroke. When riders are pushing hard, particularly during climbs or sprints, that additional stability can help maintain alignment and keep the power transfer consistent.

Long-distance comfort is another factor that becomes increasingly important the further you ride. Gravel races and marathon mountain bike events often stretch well beyond the traditional duration of XC racing, and even training rides can turn into all-day outings.

To support the foot over extended periods, the Extreme X uses Northwave’s PowerShape arch support. By supporting the natural arch of the foot, the system is designed to improve alignment through the pedal stroke while distributing pressure more evenly across the shoe. In practice this helps reduce hot spots and fatigue, something many riders will appreciate over longer duration rides. This is supported with the inclusion of two X-Dial SLW3 dials. These allow for a secure fit, with micro-adjustments that can be easily made to best suit the required demands.

What makes the Extreme X particularly relevant right now is the type of riding it is built for. Off-Road disciplines have grown rapidly in recent years, and many riders now move between gravel events, cross-country racing and long mixed-terrain training rides. Equipment that once sat firmly in one discipline is increasingly expected to perform across several.

The Extreme X reflects that shift. Its carbon sole and race-focused structure deliver the stiffness expected from a top-level XC shoe, while the traction and support built into the design make it equally suited to aggressive gravel riding. For riders who want a single pair of shoes capable of handling fast off-road riding in all its forms, that versatility is part of the appeal.

The shoe sits at the top of Northwave’s off-road range and is aimed at riders who place a premium on performance equipment. It is available in black and white colourways, in sizes 36 to 50, with half sizes from 39.5 to 45.5, giving a broad range of fit options.

With a recommended retail price of £299.99 (€299.99 - $329.99), the Extreme X positions itself firmly in the premium category. For riders chasing marginal gains in efficiency and stability, though, those details can make a real difference once the pace lifts and the terrain turns rough.
