Contador still tops UCI ranking after Tour of Poland
With many of the top contenders in the Union Cycliste International World Ranking in quiet preparation for Vuelta e Espana later in the month, it's very much steady as she goes in the latest chart.
Athough there are no changes in the Top 20, a notable mover is Irishman Dan Martin, whose overall win in the Tour of Poland at the weekend has catapulted him into 36th place on the list.
The World Ranking is compiled using a points system, with points awarded for one-day race, tour stage and stage race overall finishing positions for events in the UCI's World Calendar.
The number of points awarded depends on the ranking of the event. For example, winning the Tour de France overall gives a rider twice as many points as winning the Eneco Tour.
The individual rankings and subsequent affect on the national rankings have a bearing on the forthcoming World Championships on Sunday, October 3rd in Geelong and Melbourne, Australia. The number of points amassed by a nation influences the number of riders that can be selected. Our recent story showed that currently GB qualifies for 3 places while Spain and Italy get 9 each.
