‘Purito' finished eighth in the 2010 Tour de France and, in his best ever Grand Tour performance, took a stage victory and secured fourth overall in the 2010 Vuelta a Espana.
With the strength of Spanish cycling such as it is, anybody who can win the national road race title (2007) must clearly have some pedigree.
The Spaniard won the mountains classification while riding for Saunier Duval at the 2005 edition Vuelta and while he is known mainly for his climbing skills, Rodriguez is a versatile rider who also enjoys the Classics.
Rodriguez won the Klasika Primavera in 2007, has taken second at both Fleche Wallone and Liege-Bastogne-Liege and has a good record in the San Sebastian Classic.
If any further proof were needed, Rodriguez underlined his talent with a bronze at the 2009 World Road Race Championship behind Australian Cadel Evans and Russia's Alexandr Kolobnev.
Rodriguez's season-long consistency in major stage and one-day races netted him the 2012 and 2013 UCI WorldTour titles.
