Several riders came a cropper on the same slick corner during the nine-kilometre individual time trial in Voorburg.

Martin can be seen falling on a left-hand bend, and sent sliding across the road into the kerb, leaving a white streak across the road from his world champion’s kit.

The same corner also claimed Martin’s Katusha-Alpecin team-mate Nils Politt, Tiesj Benoot (Lotto-Soudal) and Gijs Van Hoecke (LottoNL-Jumbo).

The latter’s mechanic also slipped over on his way back to the team car.

Elia Viviani (Team Sky) also started to lose his rear wheel as he came around the bend, but righted his bike and managed to avoid falling.

Stefan Küng (BMC) won the stage having been one of the first riders to start, and in relatively dry conditions.
