Ewan was dropped on the final loop of Wednesday’s stage to Stirling and did not contest the finish to relinquish the lead.
Several riders, including overall hopes Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge) and Geraint Thomas (Sky), were held up by a crash in the finale. Thankfully, most of the riders passed through unscathed from the incident.
Stage two started in Unley and headed south east into the hills for five laps of an undulating and testing circuit – made more difficult by the hot conditions. After covering 132km, the race concluded in Stirling.
The riders now look ahead to stage three of the UCI WorldTour race, which features the first real test for the overall contenders: Corkscrew Hill. This key climb is situated near the finish in Campbelltown and will serve as an ideal launchpad for a stage-winning move.
