Hannah Barnes crashes out of the Tour de San Luis

Hannah Barnes, Sheffield Grand Prix 2013

After her dream start to the 2014 season on Tuesday, Britain's Hannah Barnes experienced cycling's cruel side yesterday as she crashed out of the Tour de San Luis.

Barnes, who started yesterday's second stage as race leader by virtue of her victory 24 hours earlier, abandoned the Argentinean event after suffering a deep cut to her knee and bruising and cuts to her hip in a mid-stage fall.

The 20-year-old required stitches to treat the former. She told CW this morning that "my hip is pretty bad and very bruised, and my knee can't bend, so I'm finding it hard to walk!"

Meanwhile, Barnes' UnitedHealtchare team-mate and fellow Brit Sharon Laws finished 18th in the 56.2-kilometre medium mountain stage around Merlo.

The 2012 British Road Race Champion now sits in 13th place overall, four seconds behind Brazilian Clemilda Fernandes, with three stages of the race remaining.
