Adam Yates climbs to second behind Rein Taaramae in Tour of Turkey
Rein Taaramae and Adam Yates go on the attack in first mountain stage of Tour of Turkey - Simon Yates crashes out of race with suspected broken collarbone
It was two very different tales for the Yates brothers in the Tour of Turkey on Tuesday, with Adam placing second on the tough mountain stage three behind Rein Taaramae (Cofidis) whilst Simon crashed out with a suspected broken collarbone.
Both of the 21-year-old British brothers are riding their first year as professionals with Orica-GreenEdge, and the team will be justifiably pleased with Adam's performance on the steep final climb to the line in Elmali.
Taaramae had launched his attack from the reduced peloton with around three kilometres to go. Only Yates responded immediately, putting in a measured ride to reach Taaramae's back wheel. The pair then worked well together to swiftly build up a lead over the chasing bunch, who appeared more concerned with attacking each other than catching the duo up front.
Taaramae's experience won through in the finale, as he put in one final push that distanced Yates. We can only wonder what would have happened had both Yates brothers been present on the final climb.
Romain Hardy (Cofidis) brought the chasers home in third, with 20-year-old Eritrean Merhawi Kudus (MTN-Qhubeka) also looking strong in fourth.
After two stage wins, Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) relinquished the race lead to Taaramae, with Yates in second and Hardy third.
